The antiseptic/antifungal qualities of lime plaster are slightly exaggerated. What gives it these qualities is its high alkalinity, but it loses quite a bit of this as it carbonates.

We recall Kindra using a couple handfuls per mixer load, as there are variations in clay and sand perhaps a little test batch can help find the right mix for your materials.

the capilarry action between the underlaying clay plaster and the lime plaster on top could lead to the clay plaster becoming too moist because moisture will drain from the lime plaster to the clay plaster but not vice versa. you will notice it when the lime plaster starts cracking because the clay below starts expanding when it is saturated with water.

Hi. My house already has cemented plaster. Can I use lime plaster on top of this ?
@befreefilm3 жыл бұрын
From Builder John -" The answer is no. The reason is the differences is cement stucco and lime are not compatible in their properties. Generally cement stucco will shed the lime or earthen plaster as it expands, contracts or moves. Usually the cement stucco is patched with more cement stucco, caulked and then painted. " From Builder Kindra - "As a general rule you can put softer material over harder material. So yes, with the right bonding you can put lime over cement. My question is: why would you want to put lime over cement stucco? The main reason I prefer lime - vapor permeability - is almost eliminated by the cement layer. A lime render is also beautiful, so perhaps you are putting a fresh coat over patchy older work? I would have to know a bit more about your wall system to make a full recommendation."

Hi, What was the material/composition of the surface on which the lime plaster was applied ? The one above the straw bales I guess. Is it lime mortar or cement mortar ?
@colonelbeatson60274 жыл бұрын
in australia i work for my dad and we are renders not plasteres and we do asorts of straw bale houses and we don't apply by hand we apply with putzmeister and mix with it as well. we do jobs for huff n puff constructions they are the bale company and we are australian render systems that render really. plus this video was put out three days after anzac day. plus when was the bush fires.?

has anyone ever heard of cement soaked straw ? it could be slip formed for 12 in walls. ????
@befreefilm4 жыл бұрын
Haven't heard of that - from what we understand cement with straw doesn't 'breathe' nor make for a comfortable environment in humid conditions. Let us know what you discover or try!

@@befreefilm hi befree ! very nice to hear from you,and thanks for pointing out the comments, my friends say i offend others without meaning to,i mean no offense at all, but trying to find the truth to the basic question. the pros, and cons, of cement soaked straw construction looking only at the evidence. i have seen much on straw used as in straw bale incapsulated in whatever masonry mud or lime plaster(know of problems with it), and know of millions of walls made from concrete(which is mostly cement and sand) , but have zero on the 2 mixed together. (or minus the sand)just straw and cement. you say it would not breathe properly, do you have any sources for that info ? i looked and looked and found zero except for a government study trying to find a way to use rice straw for building (because most burn it making to much smoke) it claimed there was excellent breathing.some science paper on it. also what does it mean uncomfortable environment ?? can you explain more about that ? it would be very nice to have sources from testing. My guess is straw soaked in cement would breathe well as their would be lots of space between the cement soaked straws. the uncomfortable environment doesn't compute for me. cement soaked straw would be good insulation, breathe,fireproof,cheap, light, mold proof,rot proof everything proof. and it may have a compression factor that might eliminate wood framing if rebar was used. of course I'm only guessing ,it doesn't seem to be tested ,ill keep looking .I know some people do not like "un-natural"materials, is cement a negative because of that ? of course it would be covered with whatever favorite plaster coating on the outside of the wall, i would guess about 12in walls using slip-forms with rebar and conduits for wiring. It seems clear your certain it is not good, but i like black and white. seems doesn't compute for me i need evidence. i sure like the work you folks do ,very nice. nice colors too !! does the lime plaster ever crack ??? shawn in michigan.

@@organicdudranch Hi Shawn, we are the filmmakers not the builders, though we have worked on several structures. From the builders we've worked with as well as the lectures and talks attended/listened to the "experts" express concrete does not have the same permeability as the natural building. We have worked on clay slip - soaking straw in a watered down clay mixture packing into forms - I dont remember anyone mixing straw with concrete though I know there is papercrete and aerated cement blocks. Perhaps different systems are better suited to different environments. Please let us know what you discover.

@@befreefilm Hi befree, i probably should not write whilst drinking many gin and tonics. heh. could it be that the experts you spoke with about concrete or cement were talking about more conventional concrete, cement soaked straw is a different animal, i don't even know anyone who has met this animal. i did find some russian dude who made a video with no english, he did seem to greatly fancy his sample of cement soaked straw. i think he buried it under 5 ft of snow for some testing of some type. i think its time for more gin and tonic. hehe.thanks anyway and good luck with the videos, do you like to drink whilst you work, I've tried slipping my crew a few sips and the next day i inspected the work and it was a little dodgy . ok a lot dodgy.

What kind of fiber is added to the mix to prevent from cracking? I have a strawbale home. The exterior I noticed has some cracks and would like to learn how to prevent from cracking . Thanks
@befreefilm4 жыл бұрын
this a plastic polymer fiber, an easier variation on using chopped straw. We will reach out to the builder to see if it is still available
@befreefilm4 жыл бұрын
From the builder "Plastic polymers we buy from masonry supply stores or concrete redi-mix places. They are widely available. Cracks in an existing plaster can mean many many different things. I caution that re-plastering may or may not help. A side note: we are now using stucco netting (basically galvanized chicken wire) in all our lime plasters."
