It's just a demonstration piece, not a actual part that will be installed in a boat. This video is part 1 of a multi part series where I do a lot more work on the demonstration piece, including wrapping the ends. I hope this helps, thanks for watching

Captain Joe, you mad that look very easy!!! I have seen some people roll up mat and place it in the corners and then resin those in place. What you did with the strand filler, is that kinda the same thing? Great tutorial video for us beginners.

Exactly what type plywood do you use, being that it's not all created equal.. Plywood designated as marine grade, in my experience is nothing more than A/B exterior. Lots of plugs and core voids. Not true marine plywood which uses high grade veneers in its core and surface. Void free and expensive.

great video! i have a question? i have made an automotive console mold and am prepared to spray gelcoat over it soon but couldnt find my fiberglass. so if i had sprayed it out 3-4-5 coats of gelcoat, could i have let it dry for a couple days, then come back and just started vynalesering with chopped strand glass right over the cured gel coat? or is there sanding or a prep that has to be done first? the best process i understand is just as the gelcoat is tacky at the end of drying/hardening is when fibergas/resin mix is to be added for good fusion? this one has stumped me. thank you

You might have said already but i missed it, why use filler and not just gel coat itself? If it hasn’t damaged into the glass wouldn’t you just be applying the same thickness gel coat as the factory did when they built it?

i’m so glad i found your channel! i’m surprising my dad with some repairs on his i’m doing on his 32 footer. We usually do projects on it together but I wanted him to relax a bit. Fiberglass was one thing i wanted to learn. Your videos have been soooo helpful! I’m definitely sticking around to soak up all the knowledge I can from you! Next on my list is learning about acrylic so I can cut him some new hatches. Then some marine upholstery because the “professional” he had reupholster the entire boat decided to not use marine-grade materials for the base and my dad is devastated 🥺 Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I'm buying an old panga (~40yrs old) to refurbish that has pretty significant chipping to the gunwale. Would you say that fillers and putty as shown in this video are good to fill in all the chips around it? (boat is about 20'x6') Thank you!
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Күн бұрын
You can use fillers on the deeper chips, then follow with two or three coats of gelcoat. You could also use a thickened gelcoat as a filler. Colloidal silica is usually the additive we use to thicken gelcoat.we have a 2 part video here on the channel using that method that you might find helpful.Thanks for watching!

What happens when sanding doesn’t work ? I’ve polished one boat a few times and legit following day oxidation is back. I felt it’s cause the boat sat in the sun. Or maybe I didn’t sand it deep enough. I’ve been polishing cars 10+ years And do texture changes and wet sanding all day. I’m clueless on gel coat sometimes

Why didn’t you use a non-skid product on this project? Looks great!
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Күн бұрын
This little skiff didn't originally come with any nonskid on deck, and the customer didn't request for it to be added and the budget for this job was very tight so he wasn't expecting a yacht quality high end gelcoat job. He was very happy with the results though. and it was as nice as the original finish. Thanks for watching!
@patrickmccall5490

Thank you for the response! I have an older skiff that I am restoring and I have been trying to find out if the original, unfinished slightly rough interior gelcoat was some type of nonskid or just a basic gelcoat application. They seem to have used a webbing method that created a droplet effect on the final topcoat. Very good content!

I just found your channel and I am grateful for the info. you are sharing. I am wondering your thoughts about thickened gel coat that is patterned with the roller as a non-skid surface vs a non-skid additive to the gelcoat? I’ve seen other videos showing this technique and it does seem similar to the original non-skid on my project skiff that was built in 1977. Thank you in advance!
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Күн бұрын
Glad you are enjoying the channel! Yes, you can roll thickened gelcoat out for a nonskid like texture. There is nothing wrong with that, but I personally prefer a non skid additive as I feel like it gives a little more grip. But it is a personal thing, so if it works for you I say go for it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

What is the easiest way to keep water spots off the hull? My boat is big and sits on a lift. So I need something that I can spray it on with a hose or sprayer. Thinking of using a vinegar mix so I don’t spend $25 every time I clean it. Suggestions?

If that gouge was a little deeper, do you prefer to use formula 27 or that 3m premium filler? I have a bit larger gouge which went slightly deeper than what you had in this video.

So what type of foam did you use making the plug. Played around a little and everyone I saw was using Pink Panther foam, but said you had to epoxy instead of other resin.

It is a 2 pound density polyester resin compatible insulation foam. I buy it at our local Advanced Plastics fiberglass distributor. I would imagine most larger fiberglass carriers would have something similar. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Put a XXX on the lid of that acetone container. And for those who might not know. When you get a bottle, can, bucket or jar of something you're not sure about, don't stick you nose up to the opening and sniff. That can be dangerous. Instead wave the lid in front of your face and sniff what wafts off that. And boat people, all solvents are heavier than air, they want to settle in your bilge. Keep this stuff in your dock box, or a bottom venting hatch (if you have one for gasoline/propane containers). If you use a volatile solvent onboard, open up some hatches and run a fan. That'll move it around and hopefully out a hatch. (Some friends lost their brand new 50' cat in Florida when one worker used acetone on board and another was working on something electrical. One spark set it off. Total loss their boat and the one next to it.) Alcohol is a bit safer than acetone..

I love your presentation and delivery. I like that you show the efficient way with power tools but, are clear about any manual tools to get the same job done, and your trick with the round sanding disc on a square sander alone worth following you, that just seems to make so much more sense and I could have used this info on my current restoration. I also understand now I could have sanded sooner with the thickened epoxy I laid, but at least I’ll be patient now when I get to fairing the patches down.🤷🏼‍♂️
