If I remember correctly, Spike was 14 when she got pregnant-14!! Isn't that a little too young??😮 Anyway, Amanda Stepto played the part really well..I liked having Dr. Sally on the show as well (aka, Sue Johennson) 😉

I like the Degrassi series, but I remember more-so of the 80's episodes. They would've been my brother's age..& I would've been around the Jr. High..I want to know which came 1st..?? The book series or the TV 📺 show..i had some of the 📚 books 📖 I had Shane, Spike, Joey & Wheels..I really liked this show..

I just found this gem 💎 love the video! The Next Generation is what got me hooked back in the day. But I've watched Junior High and Degrassi High. I LOVE Degrassi High and Schools Out! I would have watched the poo out of them if i was an 80s baby ;) They just kept getting better and better. I love all of Degrassi even the newest seasons. What can i say, I'm loyal 💙💛 can't wait to see if they will bring it back!

The way this show writes and presents Spike/Liz is so confusing for my poor tired gay brain, because they're clearly a wlw couple in all but name, yet the show never even acknowledges the possibility of it.

Very cool of you to have done this, even though i always since the 80s and still to this day HATE her character. Horrible, selfish, self-centered, controlling, man-hating, grudgful person. My least favorite character of the original show....to each their own. With age, she seemed to have learned fk all- controlling her beta husband, lying to Emma about Shane etc... thankfully Emma showed her what a hypocrite she is.

I feel old now 😂 I grew up watching all of them Cool little fact, the very first F-bomb ever to be aired on Canadian television was by Snake, when Joey had been sleeping with Tessa all summer Snake confronted Joey and said " you've been fucking Tessa all summer " The second time it was ever dropped on Canadian television was seconds after when Caitlin basically said the same thing

27:39 thank you for saying that about the Ms. Avery gaffe. You're right, it's such an insensitively-written and absurd scene, even if it is trying to present different forms of stigma in a clunky earnest way. One other issue of the dialogue as I see it is that it implies that all women who are infertile are pitiable and/or have less societal worth.

Imo Degrassi wasted an opportunity in Liz & Spike to explore teen w/w relationships earlier than they eventually did (with Alex & Paige in TNG). The weirdly conservative streak Liz developed out of nowhere for plot expediency never sat right, and it always seemed like she was closer to Spike--or wanted to be closer--than just a friend.

SEPTEMBER 2023 UPDATE: Hi guys, I was meant to upload a new video earlier this year about a 90s Canadian teen drama that replaced Degrassi High and suffered for it, but so much has happened and is still happening that I cannot commit to it right now. In the meantime, since this video is now over two years old, I wanna set the record straight on any errors and inaccuracies present in this video. The editing is rough, and that oversight at 32:27 is really, really bad. You see, this was my first attempt at creating long-form content, which is one thing, but I also made this on my aging 2016 HP notebook that was not suited for video editing. Not only was I forced to render this at 720p, I had to render each section separately and then join them. None of that is an excuse for 32:27, which was strictly my error, but it is the explanation for why this video is so rough. I promise my videos down the line will look and flow much better. The B-roll footage of the show you start seeing at 1:45 is a fanmade music video for "A Girl Named Spike" by Skankin' Pickle. I accidentally forgot to credit the user that made it called "thatvegasguy". I'm really sorry man. DEGRASSI STARTED IN 1979, NOT 1980. I got this information from degrassi.tv, the official Degrassi website, which claimed that The Kids of Degrassi Street started in 1980. In addition, the official Degrassi Generations: 411 book also claims Ida Makes A Movie (the short film now considered the 'first Degrassi episode') aired on September 20, 1980. However, since then I have searched countless Canadian newspaper TV listings and have found literally nothing suggesting it aired in 1980, nor the September 12, 1979 date often cited online. The closest we have to a true confirmed airdate is December 8, 1979, which I surmised from a newspaper article published three days later: www.newspapers.com/clip/107231264/the-expositor/ In general, I could have added a lot more in some areas and trimmed some in others. As of 2023 I don't think this video effectively explained my thoughts on Spike's character. My opinion of her has not really changed, that she is a misunderstood and badly analysed character, but I don't think the way I explained it was adequate. Down the line there will be a remake of this video and it will be a major improvement.

You would be correct. Ida Makes A Movie indeed aired in '79. I only went with 1980 when making this because the official website says so, and at the time I thought the official website would be more reliable than other sources, but after delving deeper into it looking through multiple old Canadian TV listings during that time I have found nothing that suggests it started in 1980. It definitely started in 1979, specifically December 8th, and not September 12 as seems to be generally "accepted". There's also a cited airdate of September 20, 1980 in the book Degrassi Generations: The Official 411, but I've found no TV listings for that either.

@@hannahb7038 I don't know about that. Granted, he was just a kid, and couldn't help that his parents wouldn't let him take an active part in Emma's life. But, Spike was left with the full responsibility of raising the baby when she was still a kid, too. Then, when Shane took drugs and had the accident, that took away any possibility of him ever being able to step up and be Emma's father. Spike was on her own in a pretty overwhelming situation.

I first started watching DJH and DH reruns when I was in high school in the late 90s and heavily into punk rock and all things 80s. Spike was absolutely my favourite girl on the show! How could I not go for the cute punk chick?? I would've been all over her 😍! The 3-4 year window I had between finding the masterpiece that is Degrassi and The Next Generation was just perfect timing because I didn't have to wait long nor did I need to rewatch the original series since everything was still so fresh. Honestly, I never expected TNG to last but I'm glad the show has literally touched multiple generations of fans the way it has. Isn't it messed up how none of it would have happened if Lucy's parents were ever actually home 😜?

Also… baby Drake❤ anyways the Emma character stood out the most on wiki so i read about her and her mom (aka Spike’s) backstory… and since Spike is the most notorious character to look at i divulged into her storyline and now… here i anm watching this review and also I watched It’s Late on YT. Jesus😂 Spike’s hair screams Cyndi Lauper true 80s look. Im in awe of Spike and Emma.. im still a Liberty Van Zandt kinda gal but im just in love with the show NG❤ anyways thank you for a more in depth explanation of Spike. Amanda and Miriam are the best. I'm about the same age as the characters in the show, I grew up watching this in the 80s and 90s, here in Canada. Did you guys know that there was actually a series BEFORE Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High? People tend to think the first series was Degrassi Junior High, but there was actually one before that, it was called The Kids Of Degrassi Street...I can't remember the year it was on tv, it would have been the very early 80s, I think. I remember seeing it on tv, as a kid, in the early 80s. Just mentioning it, cause I find, that, in general, people don't know about it, unless they're like me, and happened to catch it here on tv in the 80s....I don't think it really aired in any other countries. I miss shows like this that had an actual Canadian flavour. There were a lot of thsoe in the 80s, shows that actually felt Canadian, like Degrassi, Danger Bay, Seeing Things, Street Legal, The Beachcombers, and more. Like, if you watch those, that really is exactly what things were like here then...I feel like I'm back in high school when I watch Degrassi. Now, for some reason, we don't seem to have any of our own shows anymore! Drives me a bit batty. No offense to Americans, but I'm tired of all our tv shows being these slick American things, I'd like to see something that is more reflective of my own country. They really ruined Degrassi with The Next Generation, and, even worse, The Next Class....it's all slick and American, it's like watching Beverly Hills 90210.
