Today is actually the famous "Feast of Stephen" on which the equally famous Good King Wenceslas "looked out..." Though, thanks to El Nino, the frost is not particularly "cruel" in most of the country this Christmas, there is a full moon (Won't be another one on Christmas until 2034.) Here's the lyrics to the famous carol: Good King Wenceslas looked out On the feast of Stephen When the snow lay round about Deep and crisp and even. Brightly shone the moon that night Though the frost was cruel When a poor man came in sight Gath'ring winter fuel. "Hither, page, and stand by me If thou know'st it, telling Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?" "Sire, he lives a good league hence Underneath the mountain Right against the forest fence By Saint Agnes' fountain." "Bring me flesh and bring me wine Bring me pine logs hither Thou and I will see him dine When we bear him thither." Page and monarch forth they went, Forth they went together Through the rude wind's wild lament And the bitter weather. "Sire, the night is darker now And the wind blows stronger Fails my heart, I know not how, I can go no longer!" "Mark my footsteps, my good page Tread thou in them boldly! Thou shalt find the winter's rage Freeze thy blood less coldly." In his master's steps he trod Where the snow lay dinted. Heat was in the very sod Which the Saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men be sure, Wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor Shall yourselves find blessing!

Nice. Would be nicer if some images people of color were included; without that, this truly is a "White Christmas."

Wenceslas is a good example of good and evil. He was said to be a Christian man that shined of goodness, but was killed for it. Many people don't know he died by being beat then stabbed to death on the church steps, and he was killed by his own brother, and some say the whole thing was conspired by his own mother. It was all over the ruling of Bohemia, and Christianity. Wenceslas was raised by his grandmother, whom was Christian and he was very well educated. His father though had married his mother before converting to Christianity, and his mother was a daughter of a Pagan king. She rebuked Christianity as well as the rest of her siblings, aside from Wenceslas. When his father was killed in battle, it left him next to reign. As he did, he began to try to convert the kingdom to Christianity, but many wanted to hold on to the beliefs they had already followed, as well as his mother, and brother. Its said she told him he must be stopped at any cost. That`s very debatable though, but what is known is his brother ordered two men to beat him, which occurred on the church steps, after Wenceslas had stayed the night with him, and they had a quarrel over him spreading Christianity and wiping out Pagan rituals. Its then said in a story his brother came in after he was beaten to almost his last breath and stabbed a sword through his heart fatally killing him. Its said that when he was found, the first of miracles occurred because his blood never once hit the ground, but rather gathered itself on top of his body and just laid there until the middle of the wake for him, in front of a packed church, it rose up in a likeness of himself then exploded vanishing into thin air. Wenceslas was only twenty eight when he died in 935. He was indeed a good Duke, his concerns for the poor and the kingdom of Bohemia were of a good nature and genuine. The carol which was written years later by a English hymn writer by the name of John Mason Neale, in 1853. Beautifully written its debatable how much of the carol is actually true, other than the fact the song is displaying Wenceslas as a very good soul. Its is officially documented in the Czech Republic which is now what was Bohemia, that he was a very pious man, helped the poor and elderly very much even said to have given the boots off his own feet several times, and as a leader in battle he was said to have talked a Germanic general out of attacking his land by offering to fight him one on one winner takes all to avoid innocent men being killed for disputes in matters they had nothing to do with. The man was so appalled by his noble conduct they signed a peace treaty and lived peacefully until after his death. He is still today a national heroic figure in the Czech Republic and honored by the Czech people, despite most are atheist today. The carol has made him a good example of human compassion, and it was for a long time the only Christmas carol that was not about Christ. His brother reigned the Bohemian lands, but like most of Europe the Pagan believers were forced to convert. many were killed that wouldn't during the first stages of the crusades. Some say his mother walked out of Bohemia to another land, and would never return. But Wenceslas was a man of plain natural goodness, and his belief in God was devout, and though it may have gotten him killed, he was of the best unselfish nature a man can be, he died for what he believed in.....

+OLD BAY Thanks so much for taking the trouble to write this interesting history! . I believe too the original melody of this famous carol is Swedish, and is from a Spring carol; nonetheless apt, because of course, more anciently we are also celebrating the Winter Solstice when the days begin to extend by 4 minutes every day until Mid-summer, on St John's Eve, 23rd June, when they begin to shorten until Christmas.

Cuervo Luminoso I believe you may be right, it came from a Finnish songbook and was a spring carol. I agree as well with the celebration of the holiday, from my research it was decided by the church to celebrate it in December because they could not stop pagans from celebrating, so as long as they said it was Christ they were actually celebrating, they didn't care. May not sound like much, but the first crusades were attacks on the people of Europe that were still practicing their Pagan beliefs, you could be killed for it. Not a loving religion, that Christianity, is it? To each their own, but to me it is another example of how Christianity was forced upon people, rather than a decision to practice the religion. A lot of Christmas traditions are in fact pagan, but most people don't know it. The tree, decorations and more are shunned in the bible of Christian beliefs. None the less, I like the spirit of giving and a celebration once a year of beautiful creations is enough for me to admire the holiday. It would be a better world though if each religion actually lived what it said, but when you have jealous Gods and walls for love, its stifles spiritual growth. perhaps man should relize life is not rules to live by, but a mystery to be lived, and that the word empathy towards one another can go very far. But whatever your belief, Ii wish you what is now called a very Merry Christmas, and good luck and fortune to you and yours....
