I wouldn't say locals are rude to out-of-staters. I feel a person projects the direction of their interactions. Missoula is a college town, and tourism is a large part of the state's economy.

Also in colder weather, Missoula gets some of the worst air quality values because of its location dynamics. It has something called a temperature inversion which holds the smog down in the valley.

Thank you for doing this, but best view of Missoula when I left in 1993, was in the rear view mirror. Winter was fine from Oct-June, fewer people, and traffic, but no sun most of the year (Zoloft Zone), worst air quality in the lower 48, too much sports at U of M, I still have never been to the mall, sorry to hear medical care has declined. I did gigs as a property surveyor around Hamilton in 1996. I just returned for the first time earlier this year and am still in shock & horror how bad the Bitterroot is now with traffic and crowding. I still enjoy visiting and working in Lolo, but the traffic noise off of 93 is 24-7. Sidney, Terry, and Lewistown are the cutting edge places to move to, but I don't live there. Not saying where I live, but bonus is still no cell phone area. Water quality sucks naturally for most of the state.

My brother has lived in Missoula for the past 12 years and I am seriously considering joining him out there as he loves it. I am intending to move my canine rescue and training businesses out there and my brother tells me that there is a real need for those services. Yes, I am from the dreaded California but I do not align with the majority of viewpoints out here. I currently live in Landers, CA which is VERY rural. Any advice or tips for me? We plan to rent for a while and work up to buying a large property in the outskirts in the next couple of years.

How about the sudden, mass migration of exurban transplants who came in and outcompeted locals for housing and goods using the economies of the places they’re from, resulting in a quadrupling to ten-tupling house prices? How about the political colonialism, where transplants moved in mass and overran local and state politics, and helped to increase taxes and drive a cultural conversion, quickly and without the consent of locals? Locals throughout the West are incensed because of this. We didn’t want to live like the transplants, we didn’t want to live with them, and we didn’t want what they wanted. It’s intranational colonialism. Locals say NO, transplant forces a YES. 👎👎

I've lived in Missoula since 1957....don't jump on the bandwagon to get here. Infrastructure hasn't kept up with the traffic. Reserve St is a continuation of Hwy 93, so takes forever to get anywhere. Winters are long. We now need Air Conditioning in homes....Real estate is HIGH. Smoky 3 mos of the year. Fires.

The only saving grace of Hamilton is the CDC facility there which few people in Hamilton know about. The cultural, genetic, and socioeconomic consequences of the highly educated people there uplifts and saves the place. Otherwise Hamilton would be just another ignorant racist Montana town. Ravalli County possesses the most corrupt nasty judicial institution and law enforcement, county and city government. So again, the huge influx of “outsiders” saves the town of Hamilton from the same old racism that binds towns like Thompson Falls, etc

My 10 reasons why I’m out of here from telling to potentially lethal. 10) One of the most powerful movies made in the past several years, “The Power of the Dog” was unrecognized in Missoula. 9) there are terrible restaurants in Missoula. I have to go to the Meat Block in Butte for a consistently tender and savory steak 8) the aesthetic sensibility -houses, buildings, city planning, standing ovations for mediocre performances 7) worst street intersections, completely foliage-covered stop signs & large vehicles obstructing cross streets, unregulated intersections, every single parking lot walled with curbs, one ways streets out the wazoo, idiotic deference to streetcrossers near the university but no where else in the city which means sudden unexplained stopping 7) police who do NOTHING nothing nothing but respond with alacrity and agency to cursing Karens & Kens 6) frequent threats on the University of Montana to shot you ( yup never anywhere else except Missoula not in any other place even in Montana 7) gun pulled unexpectedly which necessitated me disarming him. Neither Missoula police or the company bothered to respond-baffling. 8) the small ugly mountains ranging Missoula Valley hold smoke in the valley and the smoke EVERY SUMMER is chocking 9) Pervasive small-town racism one of those situations where everyone doesn’t think that their object of derision doesn’t know better, not that they care. 10) Worst irritating fact about Missoula, MT: people don’t realize that they dress in uniform here same style, dull colors and cut of clothes; they express the same things and feel the same constricted emotions, prejudices and interests, they are not introspective and finally there is a dearth of any imagination.

These homes are ugly here believe me all of them from $350k to $30M. The aesthetics whether downtown or in South Hills or up in the ravines of millionaires homes reflects poor taste

Missoula is hated by Montanans I hate this state but I think Missoula Valley is one of the most polluted places in the world( no it’s nowhere near as bad as Taipei but you get the idea of the terrible inversion) ironically Missoulans are not outdoors people at all so it’s so crazy that they think that they are. There is one good resturant in Missoula. Little choice and just crazy how everything closes at 4 pm period. I social at the ace hardware store at Trempler Square, one of a few (3) places where you can find friend employees.

The fire smoke from Canada,WA ID,,OR,NorCal and MT itself funnels into the Missoula and Bitteroot Valleys for monthes on end in the heat of summer .Extremely bad air quality when the fires explode and burn for monthes.
