THANK YOU for saying this about Karin Slaughter, cause I was literally telling my friend the other day that you know how you can tell a movie is directed by a man when the violence towards women feels gratuitous and unnecessary? That's how I feel about Karin Slaughter's books. I don't like reading detailed descriptions of brutality, and I want my thrillers and crime fiction to be a lot more character-focused and a lot less gory. And her writing is not descriptive in a lyrical way, it's descriptive in a very clinical way that's hard to stomach.

for me, Emily Henry books are like this: I love the odd numbered books (gave five stars to Beach Read/Book Lovers/Funny Story), People you meet on vacation was a VERY meh three stars, and boy did I dislike Happy Place... Book Lovers is my favorite though, probably because of the sisters' bond since I have two sisters of my own

If I recommend someone a book that I loved and they don’t like it, that’s ok, because we’re not all the same and won’t necessarily like the same books. Now if they end up loving it too, then that’s great!

I will never read Karin Slaughter again. Every book I read from her (that was 3 books I read to completion) were so heinously violent and graphically descriptive against women and the one was against children that I wanted to hurl. One of my Goodreads reviews i even say “Karin Slaughter who hurt you?!” I read and love horror but she needs to sit in the corner for the horrendous things she made my brain movie play in my head while I read.

You, Again is one of my favs! Wish it got more love. You, Again and Funny Story have Mary Jane rep, we need more of that in books please. . . Curious about book lovers for you bc I hated that and loved People We Meet on Vacation, Happy Place and Funny Story. I still need to read Beach Read. Sometimes I wonder if the order has an impact on how much you like her books 🤷🏼‍♀️

You should read Book Lovers and Happy Place! I wasn’t a fan of Beach Read or People We Meet on Vacation, but I quite enjoyed Book Lovers and LOVED Happy Place (I don’t know why some people hate it but for me it was so realistic and the angst so good; I spent 100 pages listening to exile by Taylor Swift on repeat while reading the book 😂). And knowing that Funny Story was a 5-star read for you made me even more excited to read it soon!

I've never seen New Girl so I didn't get the references but now I'm thinking I should watch. What I loved about it was all the Northern Michigan/Wisconsin references. I summer there for vacation and it was absolutely perfect. Definitely read more Emily Henry!! People We Meet On Vacation was my least fav. I loved the rest.

Funny Story is my comfort book of 2024. It's a book that really makes me happy. I'm glad you DNFed Pretty Girls. Things would only gets worse past 50%. I used to be able to handle this kind of books, but not anymore.

I LOVED Book Lovers, it's my favorite Emily Henry, and didn't enjoy Happy Place. I tend to like every other Emily Henry book. I liked or loved Beach Read, Book Lovers and Funny Store. I didn't like People We Meet On Vacation. I like Happy Place more than PWMOV, but it didn't work for me.

I agree with you about Karen Slaughter. She is too graphic and violent for me, and I can't take the constant punishment of women. I've read one and don't ever want to read another.

I LOVE the diviners and felt all the same pain that Sara did with your review lol. I feel like all the “nothing is happening right now” is because it’s doing so much character development and then to say you don’t like the characters it makes sense why you would think it’s boring. The diviners is my favorite series of all time and I even like the last book and I feel like I’m the ONLY person on that hill lol. I feel like I compare every single book to that book and nothing hits at that level I would be so happy to find a book I enjoy more than it but idk if I ever will
