I totally agree with you about Challengers! You’re right that Tashi’s character was so underdeveloped- had no idea she was meant to be from a working class background (!) - and it felt like a really empty film. It’s more of a “style over substance” film for people who want to thirst for the main cast, and I’m not sure how everyone else is getting so much emotion and thematic weight from it 🤔

Very interesting video. I only really disagree with the very end of your essay, on the obsolescence of glory. It may be absurd in the modern world for men to pursue honor and glory, but it remains necessary not only for their mental health, but also for the preservation of society as a whole.

9:38 - 11:15 Imagining I'm a male filmmaker: Tbh I don't fully understand this argument. I agree with the notion that empowerment should not mean women filling stereotypical male societal roles. But what do you mean "acting like a man?" Realistically, how are we supposed to portray women in film? It doesn't matter what actions we depict, they're always going to be interpreted as "stereotypically masculine" or "stereotypically feminine." We can't win. Should we just abstain from depicting women at all to avoid being criticized by feminists? No, I don't think that's the right answer. So realistically, what can we do? No matter how we portray women, feminists will find a reason to be upset about it. We can't win. So why should we even try?

I wonder if the point being missed is that rather than nothing really happening, quite a lot is actually happening but not in the ways we are perhaps programmed to expect, we expect to be spoon fed a story but these 'slow films' demand that we pay attention and perhaps watch it a few time as the film is communicating on a different sensory level.

Unironically the best video I've ever seen - you literally said all of my internal thoughts out loud, and related them back to one of my favourite films. I first saw Frances Ha when I was 17 and I'm sure it means a completely different thing to me now than it did then. Even when the feeling of general doom and suffocation about being where I am in life gets to be a lot, this video helped make it feel just a little less lonely. Thank you, this was genuinely great

This is really interesting very good points made. I do disagree with the last couple of things you said though. I promise you that kind of love does exist and everyday romance is BETTER than in the movies. You just have to find the right person ❤
