I haven’t seen this movie since it was in the theaters for the first time. I just went to special Fathom presentation. The first time I saw close encounters of the third kind, I didn’t think anything about Neary leaving his family. This time it’s all I could think about. I would die for my wife and kids and nothing could drag me from them. I wish that the ending instead would have Neary balk at leaving his family and instead have Barry’s mom get on the ship with her little boy. The coda at the end could have show Neary happily reunited with his family. There is space for in the plot b/c it’s clear that his wife still loves him. More importantly even than that, is the years of heartache his kids will endure from his crazy behavior, and their swift departure in the car. There’s no resolution for those characters. It’s actually a sad ending for me. Spielberg talks about childhood joy and openness, but three important characters in the film, all children, are left traumatized by the choice of the main protagonist.
It’s actually based on a true story. The real Bastards worked for the OSS and helped liberate Innsbruck under Operation Greenup.

"the audience wants to see inside the ship" "I don't want to see inside it" Sometimes keeping the unknown concealed and *unknown* is simply the best thing. I agree, keeping the inside of the ship out of the lens was probably a better decision.
