What do you think about tunisia?was the visit better with grandiosa or do it alone?
@NooksBackpack13 күн бұрын
Do you mean travel there without a cruise ship versus visiting for a port day? It was my favorite stop this whole cruise, however, staying in Tunis overnight might have taken me a little too far out of my comfort zone. This was my first trip out of North America so maybe if I was a little more of a seasoned traveler 😁

Hi nook backpack, I have a question about the cruise restaurent, which restaurent is without additional fee ?
@NooksBackpack18 күн бұрын
La Perla Grigia is the main dining room for dinner that’s included. You can also do lunch or breakfast in La Loggia. Those 2 dining rooms and the Buffet are the only “free” places to eat.

When Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, the pyroclastic flow went West towards Herculaneum, everyone hid at the port (this was the coastline then) Unlike Pompeii which got hit with tons of rock falling and burying it, this town was ash, and is also why it’s better preserved than Pompeii

Fun video. Generally it is a toilet under the stairs. And the rooms in the front are either shops if they open onto the street, or maybe a business, but unlikely to be servants quarters since this would be the first room guests would see. And the old pipes coming down from the second floor are usually also coming from toilets into a cesspit. Fresh water came from aqueducts.
@NooksBackpackАй бұрын
Oh, that’s very interesting about the toilet, I thought they only had public toilets but it makes sense the rich folks would have em. I know about the shops but I always thought those first small rooms were for servants. If not them what or who would be in there?
@paulbredt5607Ай бұрын
If you get a guide book, they will likely say what they think the use was for each room. Archeologists love to make guesses and then disagree with each other. But Roman’s were very consistent in their housing designs, so they actually know pretty well.

The basilica was, in Roman times, not a church. They were public buildings where the business/government of the town was conducted. That style of building was taken over by the Christian Church as good worship buildings. That's why Roman Catholic Churches are called basilicas.

Trips like yours are exactly why Amtrak long distance services are necessary. They do something planes can’t do and that’s link smaller towns to larger cities.
@NooksBackpackАй бұрын
I never even thought of using Amtrak before this trip, flights are so much cheaper in Dallas and it really adds up when having to buy 5 tickets. Plus, the Heartland Flyer just got approved for an expansion into Kansas to meet up with the Southwest Chief. That will add a ton more options (not till 2029 though)

So, overall , would you cruise with MSC again?
@NooksBackpackАй бұрын
Yes, and happily. However, I’d make sure it was a port heavy itinerary. While the ship is very pretty, there’s not a ton of activities and those there are can be pretty crowded. We made a review video after the cruise, I’ll try to get it put together and posted in the next few days
@ekaterinazueva8551Ай бұрын

@@NooksBackpack thanks:) another thing, do u need a pasport to enter the country? the countries after the bording day.
@NooksBackpackАй бұрын
The night before Tunis the ship gives you a card to fill out (I showed it in the previous Sea Day video) just bring that and your cruise card to get off in Tunis. However, I noticed the excursion folks getting off the ship had their passports with them, so I guess it depends on what your plans are off the ship. That was the only place I saw anything with passports, all the other stops you can for sure leave it in on board.

We are doing this same cruise in about 3 weeks so I am on the lookout for any tips/tricks. I know you haven’t got to this point in your posts yet, but if you did the MSC excursions, do you remember when they started for Tunis and Pompeii?
@NooksBackpack2 ай бұрын
We didn’t do any excursions, they were just too expensive for all 5 of us. In Tunis when you get off the ship there’s a taxi terminal, we paid €90 for a taxi to shuttle us around all day to Sidi Bou Said, Carthage, and the Medina. Worked perfectly and way cheaper than an excursion. We basically just told him where we wanted to go and he dropped us off and waited till we were done. We even ended up staying longer in Carthage and he took us around to several old sites. By the end we were worn out and skipped the market. We got off in Naples but still went to Pompeii that day. You can take the Circumvisuviana train straight to Pompeii for Napoli Garibaldi station, super cheap (but crowded) ride
