The MV Sewol sank on the morning of April 16th, 2014, en route from Icheon towards Jeju Island in South Korea. Aboard the Sewol were 476 passengers including the crew, 250 of them being students from Danwon High School most of which were 16 or 17, who were going on a field trip to Jeju. When it was going through the Maenggol Channel, which was mostly an unsafe and unpredictable area but was currently calm, 2 crew members who were steering the boat made a 15 degrees turn to the left. It was known to ALL crew members that this specific vessel could not go more then 5 degrees in any direction, mainly due to how much cargo it was holding. The Sewol, which weighed 6,825 tons, was 3x times over legal weight limit. The Sewol was known as a cargo ship, only 25% of its profits being from passengers. There was around 200 vehicles abroad, NONE of which were tied down. So when that 5 degrees turn was made, all the vehicles slammed to the left, which started the sinking. The Sewol was not going to balance itself out, by the end of the sinking the bottom of the ship would be the top. An announcement through the PA system told everyone to stay where they were and do not move, the announcement wasn’t even made by a actual person, it was a automated message. The students trusted the captain, etc, so most of them followed what they were told, as well as some of the other passengers. By they time they realized they were going to die, it was to late. MOST but not all of the crew and the captain, captain Lee Joon-seok, were one of the first people rescued. The captain disguised himself as a passenger. Mostly all the survivors of the sinking were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived around 40 minutes before the Korean Coast Guard. Most of the crew, captain, coast guards, etc were criticized for their response. The president at the time also responded horribly to the sinking, as they prioritized their public image over the lives of their citizens. Other countries offered to help out, but were declined from the president. The were American and Japanese vessels nearby who also offered to help out. The American vessels had 1000 submarines ready when needed, etc. By the end, 304 people died, most of them being children, and only 172 people survived. Most of the students were found hugging each other, with their friends, etc. The youngest survivor was 6 years old, she was going on vacation with her mom, dad and 7 year old brother. Both the parents and her brother died, the brother and dads bodies still have not been found. Recordings of some of the students last moments were revealed by the parents. A yellow ribbon, which is often symbolized for waiting for a loved one to return, was often used to represent the victims and support the families.
