Normal YM sound and music should be really quite good. The emulated game accesses the host hardware directly and without any emulation. It's only when a game does funky stuff in combination with timers that it will start to fall apart - sample playback with help of TimerA is the usual use-case and while it doesn't sound particularly good on a real ST either it does sound even worse here :) It's not too obvious in DotC but the galloping horse sound and the lance-hit during jousting ends up crackling more and having the wrong pitch compared to real ST.

Hi, no this was purely for fun and as a personal project and was done back in 2017. Hardware and software is open source and available on Github though: github.com/agranlund/wolf Taking inspiration from SuperFX, this cartridge design houses a co-processor which is just about powerful enough for something like this Wolfenstein clone, or perhaps a Mario Kart type of game. Memory is also extremely limited. This cartridge design is not suitable for recreating anything more demanding like the games you listed.

If the video chip/monitor doesn't support 50Hz, how feasible would it be to run ST games in a video mode that has a 100Hz refresh rate and then skip every other frame when emulating? This is amazing regardless by the way :)

She looks a beaut, Anders! Does your FPU emulator let you run normal MINT 020-060 code, or are you having to recompile?
@granlund23
@granlund23 3 ай бұрын
Thank you! Sadly, my old FPU emulator for 030 does not work correctly on the 060. It will let me start programs that requires one but isn't actually using it, but the emulation doesn't give correct results if it's actually used. Rather than trying to upgrade that one I am wondering if it might not be easier to port the one from m68k Linux. It appears to support 040/060 from a quick glance at its source.

@granlund23 3 ай бұрын
It's a homemade computer of my own design. This is the first prototype version and I'm still working on the bring-up and getting all bits of the design tested - this will help me decide which modifications I may want to do for the next/final board revision. I don't have any page with more detailed info as of yet but the plan is that everything goes open-source and onto github at some point. The idea is for it to be Atari compatible enough to run clean and OS friendly applications, while games which expects all of the ST hardware would have to be aided by (partial) software emulation for missing stuff. But really, the end goal is mainly just to have fun creating my own computer.

@granlund23
@granlund23 3 ай бұрын
Thank you! I'm thrilled with the progress so far and making a list of fixes and adjustments for next revision as I work on bringing up the features of this first prototype. I'm almost afraid of saying, but so far there has been no real showstoppers or bodge wires necessary. I'm doing the main address decoding and bus logic in a small ATF1508 cpld, working in combination with a MC68150 dynamic bus-sizer. There's a bit of normal 74 series logic on there too.
@thetechnoshed

@@granlund23 Oh wow, I'd not heard of the 68150 before. I always had in the back of my mind there would need to be a lot of home made logic if I ever got around to making an 040 version of DFB1 -- I hadn't realised Motorola had provided a chip for that kind of upgrade. Anyway, keep going Anders. It looks great, and I'm sure you'll have a bodge wire to boast about soon. 😉

Yeah it became this thing fairly spontaneously and I never used a 68060 nor 68150 before so I wasn't really sure if the thing would even work, or if I had completely misunderstood some parts of the datasheets :) I'm hoping to get the normal RAM speed up a bit by implementing burst-mode but such optimisations are for later I think.

@@granlund23 Burst mode doesn't seem to have much effect in 030 land -- albeit we're often crossing into non-burstable ST-RAM, but with the 060's cache and native burstable main RAM perhaps that will help a lot. Should be interesting to see the results if you get it going :)

@granlund23
@granlund23 3 ай бұрын
It's a homemade 68060 computer of my own design. I call it Raven since it's a bit scruffy and not quite as fancy as the Atari bird(s). The thing is not 100% hardware compatible with any Atari model but it does have YM , MFP and IDE where TOS expects them. It's still fairly early and I haven't brought up and tested all of the hardware on this first version A0 yet. The end goal is really just to have fun and build my own computer, with the idea that it will eventually runt TOS / MiNT. Oh, those gold-top ones are ceramic 68901 MFP's from Thomson. I got them only because I thought they looked really cool - turns out they run super hot compared to the plastic Motorola ones so I'll probably end up switching them out :)

I love this! I started toying with building an ST emulator on the ST a couple of months back with the idea of trying to convert the 68k emulation to free-running as much as possible (my plan was to ruthlessly adapt your Basilisk code), but I didn't get very far. This is lovely. :-)
@granlund23
@granlund23 11 ай бұрын
It's still missing a bunch of things but it feels promising so far! It does work similar to Basilisk in that it doesn't emulate the CPU. While Basilisk was let loose as supervisor on heavily patched MacOS, this one is more of a generic hypervisor trapping the guest in hardware-usermode and provides emulated supervisor/usermode. This lets the host maintain full control of the machine and can quite easily re-route or emulate hardware access, correct for different stack frame formats and so on. I recon it could possibly be used as a base for emulating other 68000 machines too, but my main use-case is Atari ST on the TF536. (I do realize most games have probably been patched during the years so the practical use may be low - but fun rarely needs practical reasons :)
@thetechnoshed
@thetechnoshed 11 ай бұрын
@@granlund23 Excellent. This is exactly what I was hoping it was. There do still exist unpatched games or games where the patching isn't quite right throughout so this is perfect. My sidequest, if I'd got something up and running, was to then let you run your emulated ST in a GEM window. But that's probably less use for a 536 than an accelerated TT or Falcon. :)
