This is so extremely skewed it's marvelous as an example of this ideology's deliberate misinterpretation of every issue: 1. The use of the term latinx is a two-fer. It's an example of both white supremacist thinking by disparaging Spanish grammar as patriarchal and an attempt to queer the language by rendering the normal problematic. 2. The current notion that students must see themselves represented in the faculty and the curriculum in order to succeed has no basis, considering the experience of academically successful Asians who rarely have an Asian instructor or curricular representation, and considering the experience of millions of immigrants throughout the nation's history. The studies this assertion is based on are so methodologically flawed (see Dee & Penner as a prime example) they are embarrassing to read. 3. The term hispanic "abarca mucho y poco aprieta." Twin brothers emigrated from Hungary, one to the USA, the other to Argentina, where he started a family and then immigrated to the USA. The latter brother uses the term hispanic, and enjoys all the privileges that accords his family. The ancestors of Desi Arnaz, a Cuban, received the earliest land grants from Spain. Why do people of Spanish descent receive treatment that differs from Slovaks, Swedes, Greeks, Turks, etc? What EXACTLY is the point of the term hispanic? Whom is it intended to benefit? A Q'anjob'al speaking Guatemalan Mayan has nothing in common with a Spanglish-speaking Nuyorican, an Afro-Cuban revolutionary or a German-Chilean oligarch. 4. The assumption is absurd that the professoriate should reflect CURRENT population demographics when it takes a great deal of time to become a professor and the population has shifted enormously in a short period. By the 1960 census, the population was 87% European, 11% African, 1% Latin, 1% Asian. Exponential demographic change occurred from 1960 to 2019: 60% European, 18% Latin, 13% Black, 5.7% Asian, and 2.8% Other. 5. The disparities in transfer admission to Berkeley do not immediately indicate ethnic preference. We don't know how many white and how many hispanic applicants there were, nor do we know their GPAs and activities. Berkeley has actually cut in HALF the number of whites accepted from 1973 (13,587) to 2020 (6,590) and increased the number of hispanics by 855%! In 1973, 630 hispanics; in 2021, 6,022. See pages.github.berkeley.edu/OPA/our-berkeley/enroll-history.html The video presumes all applicants were equally qualified. Berkeley pays its diversity director, a hispanic woman, OVER $325000, and she complains of the "emotional toll." This is such a mess I'm embarrassed for USC to put out such ill-conceived drivel in the name of ideology.

Your conclusions are biased. Let’s go off of your examples: just fire the people who were incompetent. It really doesn’t matter why they were incompetent; racism, stupidity, sexism, laziness, ignorance. I see the opposite happening in school now, and that can have a unforgivable impact on a kid’s success. Don’t try to “prove” their bias, just prove their mistake.

This is the best country ( not perfect) in the world. Look at any other country If I was a white person and moved to say Japan I would have to learn their customs and language. I couldn't just demand they all study up on me and my whiteness and expect them to change there teachings to my way because of my race. I couldn't tell companies to tell their employees to be "less Japanese" because it offends me as a minority. I think what's interesting too, for any viewers for any background, is that implicit biases may be greatly different amongst different parts of the world. Obviously these demographics are based on American statistics considering the diversity - but it's interesting to look at. Some people might watch this and think, "well a majority of my school was latinx, asian, etc" and those groups moved up in education because the staff represented the students. Other's can relate to Gabi or Jo, watching there progress differenciate cause of race.

@@UGNAvalon This video makes a lot of assumptions though. First of all we're assuming that because they both placed in the area of "developmental learning" , then they must have performed the exact same way. When in reality the white student could have still outperformed the latinx student in key areas that would justify the placement. Also I dont how often councilors would actually place students differently Soley based on their ethnicity. I mean is there any data to back this up? And if the latinx student apparently spoke perfect English, why would the councilor suggest that the student take a course primarily for ESL students? That would not be an example of implicit bias but rather blatant racism. I don't know many councilors that would actually hear a student speak English fluently and place them in ESL. They're also assuming that because the white student is white he MUST relate or resonate with topics about white people with low income. Most kids I know growing up were not so invested in school, regardless of what the topic was.

@@breakmaster2107 prejudice = implicit bias. prejudice is real and it happens everyday. implicit bias is an abstract idea, it's very difficult to grasp by young people. It's part of psychology. and psychology is a college class. Of course, paying taxes has everything to do with what a school system teaches. because the tax is forced upon the taxpayers to pay, if people have a choice to: a) pay certain % of taxes and send their kids to public school or b) not pay that % of tax and spend that money to send their kids to private school, then those who pay for private school would have the right to demand for specific topics to be taught to their kids. I assume you are a grown person, tell me, has anyone ever told you or taught you HOW NOT to prejudice against other people or things? why and why not? My guess is never, because prejudice exists in our minds naturally: we see beautiful things we want to own them, we see ugly things we walk away. we see people that are different from us, we avoid them, we talk to people who speak broken English, we just turn off our ears, we like someone we try to befriend them, we dislike someone we stay away. No Fcue there are cultural differences that if not taken into account, put students at a disadvantage. Just like if an engineering teacher only taught to one type of learner, let's say auditory learners & only used their voice to teach, and never offered any visual representation of data or hands-on opportunities to build & give examples & also expected all students to show their show their understanding by say giving a speech, that puts visual & kinesthetic learners at a disadvantage. When teachers aren't aware of the differences, they inevitably perpetuate disadvantages & teach to only one type of learner.
