No particular reason other than that is where the trimmer felt comfortable. 🤣. You can definitely go lower.

The tips of the leaves are turning yellow. Its the first of July here in southern south dakota. Also is it too late to fertilize? This is my first time growing iris. They were given to me last fall and I looked up how to plant them but other than that I dont know very much about them. Also I noticed the ground around them breaking up and I was told its from moles in the yard. Will they destroy my iris? And if so how do I get rid of them? Can i get rid of the moles humanely?
@Dr.Warren
@Dr.Warren 2 күн бұрын
There is such a thing as mole traps where I believe you can relocate them and it doesn't kill them. Moles eat worms, grubs, etc so they will not directly damage your irsh but will disturb the root zone. Being as far north as you are you can probably still fertilize and it be of benefit for the plant.

Hi! I am renting a place with a small front yard. It is full of weeds and the grass is on its last leg. It takes a considerable amount of water to keep the little grass that's left green. Oh, and there is no sprinkler system! I am considering mulching the yard and strategically using a few drought-resistant plants to make it pretty (maybe some stepping stones too). I live in the central Utah desert. It is HOT, but we also get snow in the winter. Would you recommend using cardboard under the mulch as a solution for the next 2 years, or would you recommend I use the weed fabric instead? Thanks! Glad I found your channel! @Dr.Warren
@Dr.Warren
@Dr.Warren 2 күн бұрын
So weed fabric will pretty much do the same thing as cardboard but will let the water filtrate to the soil better. Being in the desert and trying to conserve water I would lean fabric. But fabric eventually breaks down too.

Wìĺ nutrients from compost get through to plants? I am considering putting cardboard on an existing flowerbed of rugosa roses and lavender. I'm in victoria bc. Thank you
@Dr.Warren
@Dr.Warren 3 күн бұрын
That's a great question. Cardboard allows water to run through it so I would think dissolved nutrients would be carried with the water and not bind to cardboard. However I do not have any peer review to suggest my thoughts are correct.

i cant believe people really celebrates lantana, this invasive species took over all our natural landscape and getting rid of em is such pain in the arse, dont plant in the ground, they tend to self-seed at a virgorous rate and by a year, your natural vegetation would be disturbed.

Hey Doc, I just found you and I will probably be subscribing with a little more time and viewing. This was a good video. I recently bought my 1st young grafted Crimson Queen from Walmart, and of course they didn't have any answers to questions. I planted it outside in zone 7, and though I have many questions, I will just burden you with 2 for now. Excuse my ignorance but the taping together of the tree to the stake, which mine has in 2 or 3 spots, i'm wondering how long should I keep them taped, and being taped won't stunt any vertical growth, right? When should the stake be removed? And do you have any expertise or videos on Sago Palms? Thanks!
@Dr.Warren
@Dr.Warren 8 күн бұрын
If it is Horticulture tape it should just break off as the diameter of the limbs grow. You can remove the stakes once the tree is strong enough to stand up to a hard wind. Palms get out of area of expertise. They are more tropical in nature and I am in zone 8.

Does every Oak produce acorns, even those that are more like shrubs with stoloniferous root systems? What is it that classifies a tree as an Oak since many that you discuss here have totally different leaf shape, texture and even color, if not producing acorns? Do all Oaks tend to hold their leaves late into winter, and as some of our White and Red Oaks, into Spring? We had the worst infestation of Spongy Moths I have ever seen this Spring ( Hudson Valley, NY) and every single Oak in our heavily forested surrounding of our home, was denuded. It looks worse than mid winter, since the caterpillars than went to my Larch, then all the Blue Spruce and White Pines,then the Maples, including my collection of Japanese Cutleaf Maples. They covered our house foundation and made gardening a horror since they dropped all over me as well. I hope that the trees can come back to their previous glory next Spring. We had the heaviest “mast” year just one year ago. Will there still be acorns at all this Fall or does an Oak with no leaves not have the resources to produce acorns? This video was so important to me since I have been attempting to learn to identify our trees for so long, and find it so confusing. Our area has many types of trees and unfortunately, asking those who work for tree care companies gets me different answers for the same tree🤦‍♀️
