I have always wondered why i have no basics in my wardrobe, yet find no issues wid cohesiveness or versatility. This video explained it so well to me. I live in a hot n humid region wid almost no great seasonal variation. The winters are short n barely cold, the rains only increase d humidity while making d heat bearable. So layering or seasonal transitions are not a factor in d wardrobes of my culture. Even 1 extra layer would prove too costly on d quality of our life for d day. So my region experiments wid colours, patterns n silhouttes. This makes all our closet pieces non-basic, vibrant n colourful. This is also the reason why most western brands don't sell too many basics in my region, bcuz they wud have fewer takers. Only d western brands dat make vibeant clothing, make money in my region.

I don't agree that basics are going to be the same for everyone. It could vary depending on your body type, climate or lifestyle, though most people will have their version of many of them. For example, not everyone looks or feels good in a crew neck black t-shirt. One person might have a charcoal v neck t shirt, another person a long sleeve turtleneck, and a third could have a tank top, but they would all fill the same "plain black top" niche in their wardrobe.

Most workplaces (like mine) won’t let you wear sleeveless shirts, which makes it even more complicated to figure out what to wear to work.
