Yes, naming convention is incredibly important to understanding. Glad you pointed that out! I didn't buy it, not just because its expensive but the user interface was complicated and I was pretty sure I would not be able to remember how I did something a new moon ago 😵‍💫 It was very much like Photoshop which has the nerdiest interface of all the photo editing software.

It is extremely hard to compete against the cheap poor inconsistent quality products from china that are govt supprted and profits are not required. I am very upset that Meade may be gone. I own an lx90 and coronado and am VERY hapyy with both. I don't know what the solution is apart from everyone not buying chinese, but financial constraints exist. 😢 lets hope Meade can be resurrected

Yep, just got a new job after a 2 month break and I'm already planning my telescope/image train/mini pc upgrades. I'm telling myself that this one will be the last upgrade for a while. It should. Going from amateur telescope C8 to pro model (maybe). But this hobby is influencing where I want to move to as well. Looking at new homes that I can't afford and the first thought is, are there trees and power lines in the fov? Not sure why, not making me any money. Just really like the process and the results when it all works, I guess.

We need bigger telescopes, smaller telescopes, different cameras, mounts, eveything. I'm retired now so I'm pretty much stuck with the gear I have so my focus is learning how to get the best out of what I have. Oh, and having fun. There is no point to anything unless you are having fun.

I began my journey with SVBony cameras and finders. Im now at the point of looking into automation. It appears that ASIAir won't help me for where I am in my progress. So until I learn otherwise, ZWO is just not a candidate as a brand at the moment for my petting zoo.

Having been in the PI community for a couple of years, one quickly gets the impression that the PI developers literally couldn't care less what users think about the UX. It's almost like a badge of honor for them. Their approach is that if you don't understand the convoluted mess, then you're the problem, not them - so f***k you. Any suggestions on the official forums to improve the usability are straight up laughed out of town. Gatekeeping of the highest order.

"...and that saves me the pain and suffering to log into Cloudy Nights" Shots fired! 😂 Completely understand the comment after reading that forum for 2 years ! I started doing visual astronomy back in the early 00s, and I used to live at a Bortle 3 area, which I had no clue about or what that even means, until just a few years ago, when I realized that I see a lot less stars at my new location than my old. That's before I started imaging. Then one cold December morning, I figured I'm gonna by my daughter a telescope for Christmas. While at it, I'll get one myself and also a cheap Alt-az tracker and a DSLR. The rest is history. I have 4 telescopes and 2 cooled cameras right now and my shopping list is still endless, but my bank account may never recover.

I've run my own Pomona Astronomy Club for 13 years now and love teaching people, back from the second total eclipse at my very good friend home, Tom Pickett Aka Picketts Bell, in Texas. I have also met Nobel laureate Brian Schmidt , Prof Fred Watson and Thousands of people and school kids too. I love astronomy and astrophotography!!! I have 11 scopes and love taking photos only if the bloody weather is ok which is rare lately, don't have a observery. I also want to put a Telescope in every school! Actually I Sent you Tom's picture of Picketts Balls which you did a show on, and I showed him the episode at his home in Texas! He loved it! Oh and lots of drink in volved too! Perfect Eclipse. Keep up the great work mate, hope to catch up one day, maybe on one of my trips to see my mate Dave Reneke . Take care and clear skies! Oh I got two of your T shirts, nice.

Le sigh. Funnily I literally just acquired a Meade 8" LX90 and it's been great. I'm aware of the electrical issues that plague Meade mounts, so I'll enjoy it for as long as it works. The thing about Orion / Meade not changing or adapting is HUGELY thanks (imho) to the complacency of the power of social media. Like a *lot* of astronomy companies they are very hands off from social media and working with content creators, which is crazy when so many new astrophotographers came about thanks to KZfaq and TikTok. Obviously I'm aware the demographic is mostly middle aged men and OAPs, but the demographic is shifting pretty rapidly. The writing is soooo obviously (painfully obviously) on the wall. We have the legacy companies who failed to adapt to a changing market and rely *only* on their name and what was. The issue is, as your loyal clientele age, your brand dies along with them. My parents (late 60s mid 70s) still think Pioneer make the best TVs..... so it's exactly that what companies rely on. A 19 year old getting into astro isn't going to be dropping $€£4K on a scope lols. They're going to hope on KZfaq and search 'what telescope should I buy' and be hit with results from the obvious channels.... all of which predominantly work with Celestron and Skywatcher; Except Ed Ting, but that in itself is a perfect example of the power of social media. People will align with people like them or that they like. He's a Meade guy, are we surprised?

No jokes this time, mate. Thanks for this, Dylan. Much appreciated by us all. I've been doing visual for 24 years, with no end in sight. Tried AP but it wasn't for me, like you said. Keep enjoying what you do and remember, you've got the Southern sky and we don't. That should be motivation enough to keep on truckin'.

i think a better solution would be have a turntable and all youd have to set is the tilt on your current mount. then the controller rotates the table to polar alignment that way you can use your current nonsmart mount and itd only need one motor. i made a wooden stand on caster wheels and i can get polar alignment in under 30seconds on my current mount. seems like thatd be a given considering its 2024 to have automated eq mounts though.

Some of the cameras I play with these days have liquid lenses which to an extent does something similar...... no idea how they'd go for capturing star stuff though... not their usecase!

I was big into astrophotography during covid. I studied it obsessively and was proud of the work I did. Using a large refractor and a EQ6-R mount… well things opened back up, and I fell in love. She shattered my heart about 3 months ago… and for the past few years I’ve seen my dusty WO132 in the closet and it would make me smile but she always wanted to spend the weekends going out or going on trips. This was the first time in 3 months since the breakup that I really got excited knowing I can come back to my true love, and I have my weekends free to drive to dark sites. Thanks for making this video Dylan, I needed it more than you know.

Nice video. When I was in high school, I spent most of my earnings on a brand-new 10" Cave Astrola Newtonian when my friends were buying cars and motorcycles. I spent my time trying to take deep sky photographs using film with little success. Trailed stars, blurry images, bad S/N - but that just peaked my interest. I refined my polar alignment technique and designed and built a RA-only clock drive corrector and guided manually for 5-minute long exposures. Slowly, I got better images. Unfortunately, school and work sidelined the hobby. Now, almost 50 years later, I'm retired and I've got the astrophotography bug again. I can't wait for the next clear night. With modern gear, I've been able to do things that I never thought I could - imaging Hubble's Cepheid in Andromeda with a 4" scope, capturing the movement of Barnard's star, getting to magnitude 23 (better than the 48" Palomar could do with film) with my 6" Petzval. I've had dozens of hobbies, but none have held my interest as long as amateur astronomy.
