It's a wonderful thing to do. I sent an intention for Mother Earth in my yoga practice yesterday. "MAY EVERY STEP TAKEN ON HIKING TRAILS BE ONE OF GRATITUDE FOR THE GIFT OF NATURE AND GIVE BACK BY CLEANING UP WHERE NEEDED".

Have I been this close to a Red Tailed Hawk? At eye level I’ve been 10 feet from one on a fence. I approached one day when it was on a wooden stand. I threw a chicken gizzard which landed right next to it. It looked up and down for a few seconds figuring out if it should grab it or not. The hawk made its response loud and clear by flying up to a tall tree branch. That chicken liver was still there hours later, dry and baked by the sun. On the contrary, I’ve gotten 0 feet away from any hawk but that is only because the hawk approached me, not the other way around! I never approach hawks anymore because everytime they fly away from me they simply just never come back anymore and find new hunting territories.

Really hope this works out for you Preston! Don't feel embarrased, none of it is your fault. I totally get the 'not feeling welcome or nothing is for me' feeling. Our brains and thoughts are not very nice to us sometimes. I have my own struggles with my thoughts, it's not fun. On a positive note, if you did end up back in Canada for the spring and part of summer, you could do some canoe tripping and camping lol!
