I would definitely love your feedback as well! My response here is merely in relation to the direct question, but I believe we both know this is a much deeper discussion. Competitive Sport is not free world street combat, but neither is the most commonly practiced versions of "Traditional Martial Arts" either. There is a necessity to be physically capable via skill & ability, as well as the necessity to ready both mentally and psychologically in a real world use of force scenario. I do tend to believe the current state of combat sports lends better to becoming physically capable (the overall levels of exertion against resistance as well as the stress inoculation associated with live training), but that does not address the mental aspects and realities of unregulated violence.
@bryangoza4390
@bryangoza4390 Ай бұрын
You can have a very technical TKD or Karate instructor who can teach you the self defense and combat side of training. You can also have a bad MMA coach who will get you hurt in a self defense setting. Training is a mindset and we can what if style vs style all day. Truth is putting in the work and putting in resistance and some sting in those strikes goes a long way. I think a lot goes back to the question what is your reasoning for training.
@NXG_HQ
@NXG_HQ Ай бұрын
I couldn't agree more! The epistemology of training supersedes any system name. Additionally, I would never fool heartedly view MMA or BJJ as combatives. Similar skillsets, but completely different mindset. My biggest point is the importance of live resistance and learning to be physical in your training environment. At a minimum this will show reality on non-compliance and express the physicality of engagement. Additionally, it is necessary to understand the difference between mutual combat (whether ego based or sport based), Self Defense (where avoid, evade are king) and Combat where you must aggress a threat... Furthermore, self-defense can quickly become combat especially when there is a moral / ethical necessity to defend a 3rd party. As a lifelong practitioner of "Traditional Martial Arts" I think combat sports have helped infuse the live resistance that was lost somewhere along the way! Great comment sir, and greatly appreciated
@rileymccormick1342
@rileymccormick1342 Ай бұрын
Agree wholeheartedly. I think the key is keeping the live resistance as a major part of the training. It shows you what works and what doesn’t.
@NXG_HQ
@NXG_HQ Ай бұрын
Couldn't agree more. I think martial is a mindset that should compliment the skillset. Of course you and I know BJJ is not Combatives, but they play hand in hand and are far from the dichotomy many people make them out to be! COMBAT SPORTS = Applicable training and a willingness to learn engagement and warrior ethos. COMBATIVES = Combat Sports skills mixed with all the dirty tricks and with a different outcome in mind. At the end of the day, the dirty tricks don't work without understanding the skills and principles on which they stand.

Hi! My parents used to move a lot wheb I was young and as I changed schools I would always get bully, kids running after me with sticks and throwing stones. My parents got me into tae kwon do. With time, it didnt stop the bullying because I could not use it out of the dojo. One day, the bigger guy hit me with a rock behind the head and I fell on the ground. As people were laughing this is when I snapped and ran directly towards the guy at which point I did a side kick which I believe my sensai called it a bi chagi. It hit his face and the kick made him spin around but his leg was planted into the ground that it twisted on impact and broke or tore something in his leg. I was shocked and afraid. I never knew years of practicing something as subtle as this kick could do devastating damage like that especially at 12 years old. It stopped the bullying completely but the kids were afraid of me after that. Ever since, I never got into a fight again. But because of that bullying, I understand now why I look like the hardest person working out at the gym through sweat wear and tear. I stopped tae kwon do and started practicing qi gongs and the 108 movement forms of tai chi chuan. My question to you is, do you feel like with years of practice you feel somewhat even more alone or distant from others or more connected?

Since it’s far more rare for kids under 16 to reach the GREEN levels, I have actually seen kids go from gray to green if they don’t have all of the tools to be a blue belt yet. In those situations, the green denotes an adult-level fighter who has surpassed white, but isn’t quite blue yet.
@NXG_HQ
@NXG_HQ 5 ай бұрын
That is correct in regards to schools that use Green as an adult rank. However, I am speaking primarily in regards to schools that maintain the primary Adult Belt Ranks of White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black. I cast no shade towards schools that use adult green belts, but we personally do not, nor is there an adult green belt category in competition... it is either white or blue. Thank you for the comment, and for supporting our page!

I know I could hand my ass to myself if I rolled with myself, however I still have a hard time sometimes with even newer students that are bigger, younger and more athletic than I am. This really is a mind fuck TBH. Some students in the gym that have been training a while I can easily dominate them, some students I always have a hard time with, but the end of the day, I am just happy I’m still able to be on the mats. I know I’m knocking on the purple door and honestly not looking forward to it as it will open up a whole new set of confidence destroying thoughts.

While I don't know whether you would be eligible for an adult class (there are some 15 year olds I allow in our adult class, and others who I don't feel are ready yet.). As far as mat time however, I believe the more mat time you have access to, the better you will get at Jiu-Jitsu. If you think your coach would allow you, take the chance and ask. Never got a stripe on my purple belt. Ive been a purple belt over 5 years. I switched schools been at it almost 2 years 3 or 4 times a week. My heart sank once i realized my professor wasnt gonna give me a stripe for a long time. Yes my feelings are hurt. I feel like im just passing through this school until i move again and im trying to be serious and consistent. I've seen others not as skilled as me getting brown belts especially those that kiss the professors ass. My purple belt is literally dissolving. I just feel discouraged.

@@NXG_HQ I’m thinking about it but I also feel like it may upset my professor and I will just get moved to the bottom of the queue. The current plan is to pick up my training regimen and making a concerted effort to start tapping all brown and black belts. Also still trying to stay gentle and rely on technique and not just being a douche at the same time. It’s a fine line to walk though. If no results in 6 months I’ll ask.

Might need your OP desperatly. 51 here, 20 years of grappling. Seasoned blue, crossed my grappling with 25 years of amateur comp boxing and wrestling (freestyle and greco). I fell in love with Prriitt Mihkelson, Dean Lister, Jeff Glover and AG Algarazam full court defensive grappling. If I cant beat a superior grappler, then I'll revert back to my A game, defense. I know its weird, go watch Priitt Mihkelson's seminars to get an idea of how I roll. Am I heading the wrong way or should I just do my thing and call it defense BJJ. I can actually sub 95% of white belts, 70% of blues and 20% of purples. Thanks in advance.
@NXG_HQ
@NXG_HQ 10 ай бұрын
I'm very familiar and a fan of Priit and his teachings. I think there is much to be said for good defense, and I believe in the Carlson Sr. saying "If you cant win, make the opponent pay a steep price for victory". Additionally, as we age (I am mid 40s) we have to balance our rolling style against our longevity and frequency of training. However, if you have safe training partners, then I also recommend opening up to try new things, and risk failure. Concern for win / loss ratio in the gym is not beneficial to overall growth in my opinion. If you haven't followed the page, hit the button because I will soon be doing a video on the importance of variety in your training partners. There is a big difference in rolling to win as opposed to rolling to improve. My question to you is which are you trying to accomplish! Answer that question, and I believe you will have answered your own question as well! Cheers. Coach B

I’m 14, and I train about 9-10 hours a week at most, sometimes do a few kids classes thrown in there, but not always. I mostly do adult classes, and mixed level classes. For some reason, since I’m still technically in the kids system, my adult classes aren’t counting towards my stripes in the system, apparently, so I’m confused. Should adult classes and kids classes combined count toward hours?
@NXG_HQ
@NXG_HQ 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for the question! I don't know much about attendance / hours based stripes as we base our promotions of skill development. We do keep attendance for reasons other than promotions so any of our teens who are allowed to train with the adults also will check in to both classes as appropriate. I do know that increased training volume (additional classes) often accounts for accelerated growth in many cases so the credit is in the skill development!

My thing is this: Let's say a student's 16th birthday is late in the year, say October - December. If he is awarded his Blue Belt in January of the year he turns 16, wouldn't he be at a disadvantage towards someone who's Birthday is earlier? How would you handle that considering IBJFF considered him 16 the entire year? Thanks.
@NXG_HQ
@NXG_HQ 10 ай бұрын
Considering 16-17 compete together in IBJJF (Juvenile I) and most other competitions this is not relevant to me. 16 is the age of promotion to Blue Belt as a standard, so if you are not 16 we do not promote to Blue Belt.

At our academy competition is encouraged at least once or twice in your BJJ journey, but not a requirement. Our members will compete against each other and guests day in and day out. My only concern is the constant force of force learning. Whether that is in the academy, other academy's open mats, or tournament competition. I just care about live training and progress.

I appreciate the reply! The video is more a roadmap for those people new to jiu-jitsu who are learning about the belt systems. As you stated, those people who have already reached higher ranks (and have the understanding you referenced) don't require such an explanation. Additionally, more experienced practitioners also understand that only their coach can convey the specifics of what he/she is looking for not only in their students, but specifically in an individual student. That was why I chose to speak in the broad scope. That being said, perhaps I should adjust the metaphors to establish a more broad reach! Thanks again
