Well done Dan. It was our first trip to Rowley that was started with a conversation with Dale and Janice last Christmas. We were happy that you and Emily also came along, with my brother and sister-in-law, Sean and Jody also joining the group, We had fun and enjoyed our time together. We'll have to do it again.

how's the road when driving with a trailer? Can you fit 30ft trailer?
@DanOCan

Road is pretty rough if it hasn't been graded for a while. Somewhere I have a photo of my truck tire that just got shredded on a sharp rock. Size isn't a huge factor, depending on the site. I have seen people in there with monster triple-axle toy haulers and wondered how they made it, but they did.

NICE ride, just my style...down hill 😅 I used to ride my mountain bike alot, but now it's been 4 or 5 years. When we spent winters in Yuma, Az. ( you know, southern BC...) we would ride quite a lot. Enjoyed your trip, maybe do some more?! Note to Emily: keep him on track, even if it's just a ride through the neighborhood! 😉

Outstanding video...I was actually a friend of Larry McGee, then-reeve of the town in the 1990's...have visited the town many times, and Larry let me up the large elevator's man-lift...whereupon I got stuck at the top...after much jumping to dislodge the man-lift, I managed to get down! Thanks so much for this great video...BTW, Daisy's House has had the beautiful and historic back part removed to make room for maintenance equipment...a terrible loss.

I got stuck on the manlift in the elevator in Wrentham, partway up. My claustrophobia kicked in badly. Same thing -- lots of jumping finally got it loose.

Good video, interesting school. I remember our house in Bellingham, Wa. when i was a kid, it had a coal chute and an old coal burning furnace in the basement. It was kinda "creepy" down there. We're "enjoying" our 109f days here in Oregon. 🥵 Happy camping!!

Thnx again for sharing your travels. I used to buy grain for the Alberta wheat pool and it was such a nail into every town’s coffins when the elevators closed and the rail lines closed. Sad and a loss. I’m so glad to see Rowley still trying to stay alive. Great job everyone. The big blue house on the corner and the roof on the school look like great humanitarian projects. Once history is gone you’ll never get it back
@DanOCan
@DanOCan 15 күн бұрын
You are so right. I had a summer job for the Wheat Pool back in 1993 or '94 in Enchant. Wish I had taken photos of our elevator and old fertilizer plant but film was expensive and the thoughts of them disappearing one day seemed so far-fetched.

There are a few that have erected Private Property signs and one that says "Smile, you are on camera". With the number of people who visit the town, I'm not surprised they need signs to keep people from wandering into their yards.

Good one, mate. Never gone for pizza night, but I've visited a few times on a weekend when it's been really quiet. Need to get back there with my latest drone on a weekend, for some neat drone footage. :) It's a shame that the school has been removed from the protected heritage list. I need to get there for drone footage while it's still standing. Shame we're not keeping that one on the protected list :(

I remember this mall, had a great food court and I would go to the theater on a weekend. I remember back in the late 90s right across was a Hard rock cafe. I hope they use that land for the public other than tall apartment buildings.
@DanOCan
@DanOCan 20 күн бұрын
Yes, the land is being redeveloped for the Green Line LRT expansion so it will be a public use space, at least in some capacity. I also went to the Hard Rock a couple of times and saw a few movies in the theatre (both the Cineplex and the IMAX) but obviously not often enough.

Love your new hat. :-) When we took our daughters there about 15 years ago, I bought a book at a gift shop on the first day. It's title: Death In Yellowstone. Why did I think that would be a good idea? I spent the next 10 days seeing lethal situations every where we turned. Death by scalding. Death by bison stampede. Death by falling off a bridge. Death by having a rock fall on your head.

This was a very interesting video. It's nice to see people actually following the drone rules to help avoid giving all drone pilots a bad rep. Your footage turned out great and it was nice to see the old UGG elevator from all those different angles as I likely won't be able to sneak out there for some of my own before this old sentinel is gone. Nice that you were able to tie in some other interesting info during your visit as well. Keep up the good work Dan O!

Oh no, that place again! I had basic there in the winter of 1974 and we were 'required' to both visit and donate to the Patton Museum. I guess the $1 I kicked in didn't do much. You're right, it does get cold there, especially when you're outside all the time. This is the first time I've seen the place since back then. When I was there Knox was home to a basic training command (TRADOC) as well as the US Army Armor School. We got to hear tanks and explosions all the time. We stayed in the old WWII barracks during our in-processing week, so I got to stay in one exactly like this. We then moved over to the brick/concrete barracks down the road. Also, they filmed most of the movie Stripes right here on Knox, in the training area. I got my first Army haircut at the same barber the actors did. If you like the actual weapons try to visit Aberdeen Proving Grounds Museum in Aberdeen, MD.

Thank you! Yes, Bents is an all-time classic. Such a shame that the vandals and trouble-makers became such a nuisance for the owner. I didn't want to bother him by being "yet another photographer asking for access" so I figured I'd do a virtual visit from the public road. I loved my first trip there in 2008.

You finished the day I retired. I first drove 66 back in January 1976. Hard to believe we did that almost 50 years ago. Life goes on. People always ask me what my favorite part of the trip was, what location was the best. For me it's that area west of Amarillo until Flagstaff, Arizona. Just had the right mix and great topography and interesting local color. Maybe you guys will have another chance to drive it, because I have a hunch in the near future the Route will be slowly disappearing. It's changed so much since 1976 that you could write a compare and contrast book between then and now. Even Tom Teague's book, from the early 90s, was sort of like that, but even that was over 30 years ago. I think nearly everyone he featured in that book is long gone today, even Tom passed away back in the mid-90s. Good luck with your future travels out there.
@DanOCan
@DanOCan 29 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for the comment and the insight. We have talked about doing the route in 2026 for the 100th anniversary but we're not sure we want to. With limited time and money, repeating the trip after just st eight years doesn't seem like the wisest thing; there are so many places to see. I always tell people that there will never be more Route 66 to see than there is today. For every successful preservation effort like the Painted Desert Trading Post, there are six more that have been lost.
