don't let them fool you you speak well in cantonese. If we talk on the phone, I can tell your wife is a foreigner by her accent. Your tone sounds like a chinese who raised in other country. There is only couple words sound weired, just fine! Trust me, I'm from HK

you guys are a cute couple....as a Mandarin speaker, I've always found Cantonese to be pretty tough to learn (12 tones as opposed to 4), so I applaud you two for sharing your language journey. I'm trying to learn some Vietnamese now and that's also a tough language to learn....

I disagree, you both have very bad pronounciation of Guangdung wha. How can i put it, you both speak American style Guangdong Wha, it is one of the worst Chinese accents i've ever heard. Listen to REAL Chinese speaking Guangdong Wha in Hong Kong, in Guangzhou & you'll hear a big difference. American Chinese pronounciation is one of the worst, think of Lucy Liu in one of the X-Files episodes, she had the worst Chinese accents ever. Its kind of like listening to that. I've listened to & heard a lot of different Chinese accents. I don't know then all, but even i have better pronounciation than he does, even then i don't even speak much Cantonese myself & i'm also HK Chinese myself but i was born in the west, yet even i know that their pronounciation is a little off, its passable, but you can clearly tell that they're not proficient enough in their pronounciation & at times their tone isn't correct especially his wife. So i don't know why or who is saying that his wife has better pronounciation than he does, simply put, they're both terrible at pronounciation of Guangdong Wha.

Pronunciation is very tricky, i agree with that! I once muttered "mah gwai fahn" or rather 'you're very annoying' in response to something my husband said, and he mimicked me, but because he couldn't pronounce the tones correctly, he ended up saying "mai gwaai fahn" ie 'buy expensive rice' 😅

She's right. He has better vocab and is more confident. He is also easier to understand in a full sentence BUT she is better at pronouncing single words. She is definitely more linguistically gifted. Hats off to her language skills to be able to pick up and speak an extremely difficult language like Cantonese.

I'm Chinese and speak Cantonese and if both of them said "I really like to dance" to me I would understand what he said right away whereas it would probably take me a few seconds more to register in my head what she was saying. I don't know, I'm an ABC myself and I guess we also have our own way of speaking Cantonese that differs from HK Cantonese speakers but when I hear Steve I just hear me and my friends talking in Chinese. Honestly when he said vegetable that's just how I say it. I have never heard anyone around me say it the other way.
