Sweet looking restoration! Looks like new! We had that same mill in our shop. That is one tough old gal! Ours was in need of backlash nuts. But our senior machinist wasn't about to down the machine for the time. Replaced it with a Republic Lagun VBN 1000. (CNC capable). When we moved to a new building about 6 years ago. The power and travel on the Lagun smokes the BP counterpart.

My Lagun vs my buddies Bridgeport is no contest. The BP is way less machine than the Lagun.

I’ve owned Bridgeport, Index, Lagun, Comet, Millport, A Trump, Cleveland, Kent.. I’ve used Tree, KT’s, Acer, Alliant, and a few others.. The Laguns in owned were outstanding machines. Heavier than Bridgeport and more travels. I prefer the Acer I have now because of the frequency motor it uses.. beats all others down.

@paulbfields8284 yeah those are nice machines the acer are super quiet and beautiful cuts we have 2 at work. Box ways and come with turcite from factory.

Very god machine ,strong to turning hard material like White cast iron, D2, Stainless steel 300- 400 Series . GOOD SOLID DESING CASTING BODY. The bad thinks has a TOOL POST MADE IN CHINA VERY CHEAP DESING FOR A GOOD LATHE.

when did they make the backtrack on the tailstock? looks like they decided they should add the feature that makes it so uselessly awkward as all the other 12x36's... sad.... saw an old one of the same model and it actually had a proper tailstock for a change. now im trying to hunt one down rather than modify mine... but, this suggests that theyre all going to be useless out of the box now. and have been for a decade. p.s. if you cant see whats wrong with teh tailstock just LOOKING at it.... you havent done enough work between centers.

In the early 80s, I apprenticed on the much smaller old pre-WW2, ram-type No.3 and No.5 Gisholt turret lathes, both with 4 piece split collets and bar feed systems... Our shop replaced both of them with Mazak CNC turning centers in 1990... After sometime in 1950, Gisholt strictly concentrated on these huge _Masterline_ monsters of various sizes, lengths, and torque capacities, (more for large scale engine parts, piping and plumbing fixtures for boilers and water treatment, and petroleum production and refining equipment) up until the company went bust in 1974 or 1975...
