My only difference is I use no tension on the spring and it gives me more control of the spacings... so more phrasings... Also you still need to pump your calves every so often to replenish your oxygen lvls in your muscles.

What is your spring tension? Seems like I can only get pretty close doing either almost too light to trigger or really hard like a lot of leg into it.. My tension is about 3/4 ...beaters are just about standard 45 degrees, maybe a little closer. Trying this improved my control already !!

It's currently maxed. Have you tried lowering the tension to a 2/4 medium setting?

@GiancarloRaveloGarcia the 2nd part is hard to do slower, the first part I'll miss a couple hits once in awhile. I'm using a strap drive with a yamaha dfp and heavier tama accu strike beaters ...hard to control for my intermediate level lol thanks though I'll mess around !

I still have to work on control , but I'm glad the frustration is over. Your POV and how you told me its a combination of resting and lifting really made my couple month frustration end- thanks again man!
@GiancarloRaveloGarcia2 күн бұрын
Glad I could help you end the frustration man! The best way to save energy, get power and control playing this technique is combining the right muscles for the best results. It almost translates to a "flat" foot technique but without the need of applying a static / twitching motion in your leg. Keep shredding! Cheers.

When I do this I feel unstable and lacking power if I have my feet where yours are, I tend to put the balls of my feet just above the hinge of the footboards. Does your foot positioning come with time? Is it something I should be striving for?
@GiancarloRaveloGarcia6 күн бұрын
It comes with time when you find the sweet spot on your pedal. I normally play either in the middle or top of the footboard right behind the direct drive link. Anything from 100 to 210 BPM the balls of my feet stay in the middle. If it's 220 and up I slide my foot forward a bit to feel less weight when pushing for higher tempos.

Thanks for the video, Very informative. Can you explain setting up the spring tension to your body weight and the optimal pedal height?
@GiancarloRaveloGarcia9 күн бұрын
You're welcome! The spring tension can be set for your body weight by playing on three settings, loose, medium or max tension. If your body reacts better with any, stick to that setting for at least 2 weeks to get used to that tension. As far as "Pedal height" I assume you're referring to the footboard height? If so. You can set the height to the middle position. Not too high not too low and see how it works for you.

I've been stuck for years. I twitch at high tempos so can go really fast but no control. And I can control the rebound with my left at slower tempos but not with my right. I've done great progress practicing on the floor with my right (my ankle is loose now whereas it used to be totally locked before when trying to bounce my foot on the floor) but can't seem to translate it to the pedal.
@GiancarloRaveloGarcia10 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing your concern. Here are two videos I made with some tips and recommendations to eliminate the twitching motion (which does not allow your ankle to move freely due to the tension you produce on your whole leg). This is common when you're not used to activating / deactivating the muscle groups you need to use to play the Ankle Technique. Hope this helps! I already commented on how great this video is, but something else came to mind: you should make another video with the second step of this "first stroke" approach. What I mean by that is any time the feet don't start the pattern at the same time. This happens a lot, any broken foot pattern will result in this. For instance if you remove one left foot (ex. R_RL RLRL RLRL RLRL). The right foot is already playing its second stroke while the left foot is only getting its first, resulting in the drummer having to "offset" the way he thinks about his feet. The more broken the pattern gets, the more complex this becomes (hello Fear Factory).

This is great, thank you. Would you say you have enough power at these speeds to cut through if you were, for example, playing a concert with nothing but the raw batter head and the kick drum mic?
@GiancarloRaveloGarcia14 күн бұрын
You're welcome man! If the EQ is good and the sound engineer sets the correct parameters, you're able to get a decent sound our of the Kick drum mic up to certain tempos ( 150-160 and maybe 170 tops) However, the down side is that it if the venue / stage is big with a huge crowd it wouldn't work as much or when playing faster tempos. If you have the option to throw a trigger this will amplify the sound to play double bass patterns (from 180 to 200 BPM and above) louder and will cut through much more in a live setting.

Thanks for the video. The only problem is, there's no way I can do that exercise at the end yet. Can you recommend any exercises for someone just starting out learning ankle technique? (I've been playing for 3 years and until now just played rock/heavy metal with a heel-up technique, until I hurt my knees from stomping too hard, separating my foot from the pedal and not using my calves and ankles enough).
@GiancarloRaveloGarcia21 күн бұрын
You're welcome! Sorry to hear about you getting hurt. If you are feeling better, I'd recommend the following. - Play slowly at a comfortable speed for 1 or 2 bars and increase 5 BPM after every run until you reach the speed you struggle with (do not push hard to get thought to avoid more injuries). - In the video you can see some warmup exercises before you attempt the ankle technique. Try to isolate your hip flexors or any big muscle and focus on using your calves and ankles. Try to mimic bouncing a basketball with your ankles. - Attempt to swing the beater (even if you're not touching the bass drum head) to get the motion flowing until you feel relaxed hitting the notes and control the rebound. Let me know if this works out to see where you struggle the most after applying these principals.

@prod_adrian I can understand putting rigorous daily practice with A LOT of discipline can bring you closer to learn this "faster" but, honestly. However, I've been a single stroke player for most of my years playing drums. So, I use it sometimes as a second option 😆

It seems like some people never learn it to be honest, even after years of following for example Marthyns tips etc. Do not worry about HeelToe, if I could play like that with ankles I would just stick to that and perfect it. I think single strokes are way way cooler, but its just incredibly frustrating and daunting to learn, soulcrushing without the progress! Thats basically my only reason for trying HeelToe doubles technique... Might be my only chance for fast kicks.
