I make 1 gal batches, is there a way I can avoid wasting the excess yeast or make it more economical? It doesn't seem like using a portion and saving the rest in the open pack is possible, but maybe I could re-use the yeast cake or something?

Delightful video, Tony. Technically, the key nutrient that yeast need is missing from honey and that is Nitrogen. Sadly, raisins have virtually none - even those who make wine from grapes and typically, we use about 15 lbs (about 7 kg) of grapes for every gallon of wine we still need to add nutrients. As you note, indigenous yeast is not usually as robust as lab cultured yeasts and so wines made with "wild" yeast may not ferment as fully, so you are left with a sweeter rather than a more dry wine.. BUT not all indigenous yeast are equal and the flavors that they can produce may not always be to OUR satisfaction. In my (limited) experience, when I use indigenous yeast in my wine making (fruits, flowers, vegetables or honey, about 1 in 4 batches are good to drink. So, if you have found a colony of yeast you like, I would harvest that colony and reuse it as your own special yeast colony. BUT be aware that while a colony of yeast may work well for you once, the make up of that colony may change over time and you may find that the kinds of yeast that were dominant in one batch are no longer as dominant in subsequent batches and so the flavors and aromas of your wines and mead change... and not always in ways you prefer.

In Romania, Socată is a drink that is typically a tea, but can be let ferment. I would make it every year with my father. If you rack into beer bottles or swing top so it will handle carbonation. This low abv is a refreshing for Summer.

great idea!! and thanks for providing plans! I would also like to know about the tool racks on the walls above your bench. I have never seen anything like it and it looks very ideal! I would like some and hope I can find them locally! What is the name, and who is the mfg.? Do you like them? Have you found any negatives about them? What do you use to attach your tools to the 'panels'? Also, about the portable, foldable, work bench you use outside, I have one similar, and I need bench dogs for mine, and I like the ones on yours, and I would like to learn from you, who makes those bench dogs, and can I order some? thank you!

Hello again, The tool racks are from a German manufacturer called Küpper. They also produce all the holders that you can easily click into the racks. It is ideal! Whenever you need to reorganize, just take the holders out and place them somewhere else. If you happen to live in Europe you can easily order it online... The workbench is a cheap Black&Decker workmate knock-off and comes with the dogs... The brand is called Parkside and it is sold at Lidl - which happens to be a grocery store 😂 again, easily accesible in Europe. Where are you from? Cheers, Tony!

Hi Tony. I have two questions if you can spare the time. Why do you add the spacers between the rod and the file? Do these present a vulnerability to them tilting over and collapsing under the force of filling?
@TonyNeedsHobbies
@TonyNeedsHobbies 29 күн бұрын
Hi Lemmingski, Thanks for watching my video and the question you ask. Here's my answer: I add those wooden spacers so that I can clamp the file more securely to the rod and to make sure it is parallel to it. I guess it's not strictly required. If you tighten the hose clamps really well, it doesn't tilt or collapse under the force of filing. I actually think it holds better with these little wooden spacers. Greetings, Tony!

Hi Tony 3:16 ..... I am wondering if you could make a video which explains the different thickness of leather and possibly demonstrate mystery braids on different thicknesses. And also, I would like to know how each weight corresponds to a thickness. For example (Xmm) thick leather is equal to (X ounces) leather..... Also, when you use different thicknesses of leather, the mystery braid bracelet looks very very different ! I used some 1/16" leather and the mystery braid could have many completed series. The 1/4" thick leather is very stiff and hard to bend for braiding but looks tough and masculine when finished. Also, please explain how using different widths impacts the overall look of the braid! (and the ease of braiding). thank you, susanspad SB

Why did you add nutrient to the water when the smack pack has nutrient already?
@TonyNeedsHobbies
@TonyNeedsHobbies 3 ай бұрын
Hi Rspaulding, from what I understand the smack pack has enough nutrient for kick starting the yeast in the pack, but not enough to efficiently multiply the amount of yeast a couple of times to ferment a large batch of higher gravity wort. Whenever I create a large starter I add nutrient and malt extract in order to put the yeast in the most ideal situation (with the limited gear I own 😉) and this has worked for me quite a few times already. Hope this helps! Cheers and Happy Brewing! Tony

Black laces look better because they match the sole and the loop. How comfortabele are they around the heel?
@TonyNeedsHobbies
@TonyNeedsHobbies 3 ай бұрын
Hi Dwight, Thank you, I totally agree. They are much more comfortable around the heel using the custom insert that I designed for these shoes. The first pair I made had the loop sewn on the inside but it didn't wrap around the heel so it gave a lot of blisters. I ended up cutting the loop out for better comfort. But this green/brown pair is very comfortable with the heel insert. Greetings, Tony

Good job. When heat treating high carbon steel, it is usually best to heat the metal till a magnet wont stick to it, then quench in canola oil (heat treating is very complex but for a diy/home job this method works pretty well). Straight after quenching, temper for 2 x 1hrs cooling inbetween at 300-400 celcius higher the temperature the more flexibility it will have. Don't drop or hit or flex before tempering. Hope this helps someone

Sadly I don’t remember any Dutch. One fond memory was in a pub in Zeist drinking a few beers and the bar tender was playing a Bobby Vinton album. Every time a new song came on all the older Dutch men would turn to us and sing the first few words. They also kept buying us beer until we were well lubricated.
