Views from the gravel road are amazing and shouldn't be missed but are there more tire issues than usually experienced? Some gnarly rocks on the road.

This is another great video of beautiful Norway, and I understand that you are trying to show these routes in the best light to entice people to actually come and ride them, but I miss Moaning Matthew. A jovial comment about sheep in the road, and the smallest mention of the plague of annoying flies, Moaning Matthew would have had more to say about this, and on top of having to do the hill climb as the first effort of the day!

A week or two before you posted this, i finalised my route planning for my Norway trip and this loop was day 5. It was good, though i have preferred most of my other rides. I started at Ådneram and the long drop to Lauvvik is pretty, but I'd climbed up to Folgefonna glacier the day before so it had a lot to live up to! The ferry ride was lovely. I rode around in circles around Lysebotn to warm up again and enjoyed the climb. The remaining 20km back to Ådneram were stunning but the traffic was hideous.

On the Russian side, going toward Murmansk, you have two military checkpoints, and then a rest stop in between them. It's pretty uneventful. That as of 2019, they might have more military checkpoints now.

There is actually a triathlon ThorXtri that starts with the swim in Lysefjorden, bikes up the climb and then along the Suleskard road. There is also a swimrun named Rockman, funnily enough, that swims and runs around the Lysefjorden. So your suggestion that rockman would be at home there is most definitely true

The difference betweeen Switzerland and Norway is that you can access all these beautiful places in CH, and usually with just a bike or walking - if not, a funicular at worst. In Norway, if they allow you to access them at all, you have to have a car ...
@stevenhatley610810 күн бұрын
One can avoid the E16 stretch entirely, just requires going on the south side around the lake, and then an extra minor climb and gravel section between Bulken and Evanger. Beautiful ride!

Talk about memories for me! In 1970, when I was 12, my family and I went down that zigzag road from the Stalheim Hotel. It was just a rough road then, and my mum, who was the driver of our rickety Bedford van, was somewhat anxious about it! But we survived, and then took the ferry at the end of the valley along the fjord. My dad had been in Norway in WW2 as part of Churchill's Special Operations and became fluent in Norwegian. After the war, he went back to Norway, and spent some time in this area, as well as at Spiterstulen, where he was a guide on the glacier that leads up to the top of Norway. Much later, in August 2012, I revisited this wonderful place, and I walked most of the gravel track you have just cycled. There was snow on the top then, too! I sat on that very same bench that you sat on! Happy memories of a beautiful time and place. Thank you so much for showing this ride. Greetings from Devon.

Jordalen is a paradise for backcountry / randonee skiiing in the winter. I've been up and down more or less every peak and hill in the area on skis. Interesting fact: Stalheim hotel was used by the German Nazis "Lebensborn" to raise the children of German soldiers with Norwegian mothers during WWII.

Please note that Stalheimskleiva is now open for cyclists. Opened one month ago. Great video as always, Matthew. Btw the old tunnels from Jordalen down to the valley/E16 was regarded as the most insane piece of tunnels in Norway. It takes on a small road to the right of the beginning of the tunnel. I am not sure if it is open but look for KZfaq videos. That tunnel is insane beyond insane.

Amazing roads. I'm not really a cyclist, and I can clearly see on my one motorcycle ride through Norway I missed a lot. Wish I had more vacation time but alas, won't be able to go this year, even though I'm all fired up to get there again now. Cycling is great but all the up and down has to be brutal. On a motorcycle, inclines just add to the fun. Keep up the great videos.
