About to put metal roofs on 2 sheds and wasn't sure which snips to add to my tool box. Thanks to this video, no doubt left and right offset to complement my straight snips. Best video on KZfaq re this subject. Awesome. Thanks!!!

Yes, thanks for the excellent explanation. One thing I'm missing: is there something that straight snips are good for that offset aren't? From what I can tell, offset are better at everything 😅

There’s really no point buying the straight snips just get a left and right offset

the swenson shear model 48 by default cuts about 1/2 inch out of square in a 39" panel unless you have someone restrain the panel or you make a jig. You can see the panel move during the cut in this video. It does cut clean, and greatly increases productivity but you have to restrain the panel.

What prevents the whole thing from sliding? I didn't see the clips get secured.

When the M8 bolt is tightened down, it pulls the assembly tight. Essentially, the design of the CF-Tab/Gripperfix Rail assembly is such that when the bolt is tightened, it puts pressure on the interface between the two parts and squeezes them together. With this design there is no need for additional fasteners to lock the rail into place.

I plan on installing Zinc. It looked like there was a fair amount of rotating of the gutter needed to get the gutter to fit into the hangers properly. Would it be possible to solder 10" sections to an outside corner and then set it into place? I ask this because I would prefer not to solder on the roof? I would then use the gasket connector on my long runs, but would like to minimize the use of gasket connectors.
@RapidMaterials2 жыл бұрын
If you are comfortable soldering zinc, I see no reason you couldn't do this.
@randombrandon85142 жыл бұрын
You didn't seem concerned about screwing the hangers into rafters, is that not necessary with this system? Would you shorted the spacing to 18" or 16" in the midwest with more snow and ice?
@RapidMaterials2 жыл бұрын
The fascia on my house is a 1x8 backed by a 2x6, so I am getting full screw embedment. If all you have is a 1x fascia board, and have any kind of snow load, you should try to fasten through into the rafter tails, or use roof mount hangers (which of course require the roof to be removed and reinstalled after gutter installation). Also to note: Gutter systems are not designed to be the primary snow retention system on any structure. If you have snow loads that are heavy enough to potentially pull gutters off the structure, you should consider using some type of snow retention system on the roof to keep the snow load on the roof, and out of the gutters.

I notice you don't have a drip edge or gutter apron. Is because your shingles hang over enough that you are not worried about water getting on the facia?
@RapidMaterials2 жыл бұрын
At the time the shingle roof was installed on our house (prior to our purchase) Georgia building code did not require a drip edge on shingle roof installations. When we reroof later this year, we will be adding drip edge to meet updated Georgia Building codes. That being said, due to the design of the brackets, they actually hold the gutter off the fascia, so water on the fascia is minimal. I should add: In the year and a half or so that we've had these gutters on the roof, we have yet to have had a rain even that caused the gutters to overflow. One of the inherent properties of half round gutters is that they flow much faster that flat bottom gutters, so if you have adequate slope, and adequate drainage, they aren't overflowing even when most flat bottom "K-style" gutters are. Another advantage is the shape of the downspout. Again, water flows (spirals) down a round tube much faster than a rectangular or square tube, and is much less likely to cavitate.
@randombrandon85142 жыл бұрын
I thought the gutters were only supposed to be cut cold- e.g. with a hack saw or cold saw. Not a big deal I guess?
@RapidMaterials2 жыл бұрын
Painted gutters should generally be cut with a cold saw or hacksaw due to the possibility of hot metal particles embedding in the paint. This can lead to a discoloration of the paint when that tiny metal particle begins to rust.
@randombrandon85142 жыл бұрын
How did you arrive at the slope- just experience? I thought I saw something from the manufacturer that recommended 1/16" per foot which seems too much to me. I think you used 1/8 per 4', so roughly 1/4" per 10 feet which is what I see generally recommended.
@RapidMaterials2 жыл бұрын
The manufacturer's recommended slope for this gutter system is 1/16" to 1/8" per 3 feet of gutter. I leaned toward the higher end of the limit simply because of the amount of rainfall we can get here in Georgia in a single rain event.

Thank you! Very informative. Are there disadvantages to offset snips? I bought my first pair and decided to go with that non-offset, but now I’m second guessing myself.
@RapidMaterials2 жыл бұрын
Nick, the only real disadvantage to offset snips is that the blades tend to be a good bit larger that traditional aviation snips, so if you are working it tight spaces, they might be a bit awkward.

It’s strange that a soldering “iron” is actually a copper. 45 years ago, we called them soldering coppers….
@RapidMaterials3 жыл бұрын
That tends to be a regional term. Folks in the northeastern US traditionally have called the soldering "coppers", while the term soldering "iron" is widely used in the rest of the US.

It always leaves a messy cut on the final part of the rotation. Does using support material like timber underneath work to prevent that? Thanks.
@RapidMaterials3 жыл бұрын
Because the tool is supported by the "drop", we've found that with lighter gauge sheet materials, it seems to work best to stop the cut just short of complete, then finish the cut with a pair of snips. Bear in mind that this tools was designed for the HVAC industry, where cosmetics are not as much a concern

I used two of these today and the insert definitely walks uphill despite pinching it. Vise grips keep it in place better. But I could not get the insert lip to fit OVER the ASC Skyline panel rib top. The insert lip walks DOWN the rib. Nothing I did could get the insert lip to stay ABOVE the rib ridge. The clamp appears to be a good fit otherwise, but definitely not a flawless design for the ASC Skyline panel. Keep in mind any install recommendations must be done flat on my stomach with live electrical service a few feet above my head since I need these for the masthead braces.

Nifty. I like the self-contained heat gun. Do zinc roofing panels always require heating on the jobsite?
@RapidMaterials4 жыл бұрын
Zinc usaully only requires pre-heating if the surface temperature is below 75-80 degrees. Lower than that and there is a risk of fracturing.
