Streisand was about the same age as Lainie is here when she recorded her last album to date, Walls. She still sounded sensational. Her voice has hardly diminished with age at all. Lainie has not been so lucky.

When Streisand's voice started to show constant raspiness in live concerts, say, since 2006, I couldn't deny the fact that I was really disappointed. As years passed by and her voice was not getting any clearer, I have learned to appreciate the other aspects, such as her artistry and her sense of relaxation when on stage, despite stage fright in her younger years. In this Hyde Park concert, she looked so relaxed and was not afraid to turn to the conductor and ask if she was singing in the right key. That brings me a smile and lots of joy. With all said, she's still my favorite singer, new CDs of whom I will keep buying and listening to.

That's interesting ... I knew (around the same time (2006), that the voice was pretty much gone. Not buying the "rich smokiness" and "luxurious deeper register" bs ... THE voice is shot and even her speaking voice is annoyingly nasal, like she's got a permanent bad cold. Sad to see her go out on this sour note, but all -good- great things come to end.

Personally as much as I loved Barbra at her peak vocally in her youth and I enjoyed the change as she aged into her mid life etc, now though I have really come to enjoy her sound now and man no one can touch her for phrasing and telling the story of a song and listening to her here she's bang on pitch and still has vocal power. This lady is exceptional.

I love her singing, but she's so full of crap, just like a politician. She says the world needs love, yet at every turn she's posting the most divisive comments about republicans being devils and evil. People can have political opinons and stances, but if you're an activist for one party - trying to ensure they are the only party - then she doesn't want the world with diversity or love, she should be singing... "what the world needs now is more democrats sweet democrats."

Lainie Kazan had one career misfortune after another sadly and apparently made one bad decision after another. Streisand rarely missed performances in Funny Girl because she believed that after the show was a smash, and she became a star, audiences deserved to see her. Fair enough. Lainie was once a pretty good singer. Not great, but good. This is painful to listen to and sad to watch. If she's new to you and want to hear her at her best, she made many albums so try to find them.

Lainie had a marvelous career and she was in many films.... BEACHES was one. Her voice is clearly gone and she struggled with this song, but I give her credit. She did it and did her best. I love her.... Was she "prettier" than Barbra? Who cares. Barbra is now 80. Her voice is not the same either. Time passes. That is most sad to me.

Admirable effort! I think it’s great she’s trying, but as an accompanist I’m confused why they didn’t try a more comfortable key for her, even if it had to be in the lady bass key. Unfortunately our voices age and become more harsh. You can hear moments of her former tone quality in the lower parts. She’s a great story teller! Get you a pianist that knows what they are doing girl and you’ll be golden. She looks great!

The problem is a song like this has a big range which makes going lower more difficult. The original range is from G#3 to E5. She's doing this in Ab (at age 76) which is a minor third down from the original B so her lowest note is here F3 - she'd have to go below that. (When she recorded it in 1998 at age 58, it was in Bb.) It's said that Jule Styne wanted Streisand so that he wrote the song so that only she could sing it. P.S. I'm singing this in my Adult Ed Musical Theatre class - turning 68 next month and I transposed it to Ab too!

@@xhaxha1028 It sounds like more than an aging voice to me. She seems to be having some temporary vocal issues (from a cold, or strain, or nerves, etc.) that got worse through the song, and was just trying to power through. I seriously doubt she would have attempted this song (regardless of key) if that was her usual voice at this stage of her game. This was pretty painful, but I suspect she's still capable of delivering a much better version.

Agreed. Also, if you watch some of Kazan's performances from decades past, you can see there was some questionable technique even in her much younger years. Had that had been a bit more solid, it might have helped her navigate these later years better. But hey, at least she's a good storyteller...
