I don’t know what state they are in now, but craft brewing in Calgary owes a lot to Ed McNally. Ed (a lawyer) was not impressed with beer in Calgary. In the ’80s he represented Alberta barley growers in a law suit against the Alberta wheat board. Along the way he learned about the various grains and production and decided to open a brewery to make drinkable beer available. He built a brewery and imported brew masters from Europe. Although his many beers were very popular, he strictly limited the amount that they produced, stating that they wanted to remain a brewery, not become a beer factory. I think Ed has been dead for 10yrs or so, I don’t know what has become of the brewery - from multiple experiences, when a company run with a passion for what it does gets passed down, it’s very common for it to lose its way.

Big Rock were years ahead in the small independent brewers section of the market, they were much more a brewery than an outlet, there are a lot of brewers now that concentrate on being very 'open' to the public, designing their breweries to be both bar and brewery, Big Rock just made their beers and sold them through the usual outlets, bars/hotels and liquor stores

@@adrianmcgrath1984 that’s incredible! I love the insight from you on this! I know that there really wasn’t much for craft beer here for a long time, and recently it’s blown up - I guess like everywhere - but this is great to know! We still got a few places left to go but this was a great start for us haha!!

@@TipsyTofuTravels I actually took a look on line and found a new representative for the company going on about their 'new direction' - which sounded remarkably like jumping on the bandwagon with a myriad of trendy variations on what they were known for, which was quite a good range, with seasonal brews etc. The company founder lived in a market where there were many beers available, many with their own niche market, beers for the old folk and through to young crowd. He just wanted to make the very best beers and did very well at it. I’ve just seen so many businesses being passed down to be destroyed by new management or the owners kids. And the sad thing is that the market for what they were doing hasn’t gone away, they just get abandoned so the new management can chase a new and different market. Sometimes out of vanity, sometimes out of greed.

Both the beans - and the tomatoes - in baked beans were cultivated and developed by native Americans. Heinz is also an American company. You'll find a few different brands of beans available, and a number of styles - Heinz do about ten different styles, though some are more regional. The beans sold in the UK are a bit more bland and a bit less sweet, however the concept of beans and mixing syrup, or molasses or lard or bacon is a practical one. Whether you are a pioneer, a homesteader or a cowboy out on the trail, you would typically cook in one pan over an open fire, and could only carry or store food that didn’t require refrigeration. Beans can be carried dried, they’re light, they’re small and provide good sustenance. A bit of cured meat - like bacon could be carried and would add a lot of flavour. Things like syrups are self preserving, add flavour and add calories, which is what you needed for a tough day on the trail. Maple syrup is just our national sweetener, just as the Greeks use honey. It is something that has been available to us forever, and available without the need to be imported. I’ve heard Brits who think that’s pretty funny, but unlike the UK, we didn’t have 300yrs of slavery to set up and exploit foreign countries to grow sugar cane.

@@adrianmcgrath1984 thank you so much for sharing this info! I am a history major and studied the British Empire and imperialism quite broadly, but I didn’t get the opportunity to learn about Native American history, including that of Canada. I was fortunate to visit a museum in Alberta last year which detailed the relationship between colonials and indigenous, and the fur trade in the 19th century and learned a lot more. I am always eager to learn as much as I can, so again, I appreciate you. I guess in a more recent cultural context, Heinz beans are associated with British “Full English Breakfast” which is mostly what I was referring to in this video. But of course, as you mention, the company is American and beans are used in all sorts of cuisines. Thank you again for taking the time to comment!

@@TipsyTofuTravels I was born and raised in the UK, but moved to Canada many years ago. One of the first things I learned after leaving the UK was that British education has quite a slant on it. Despite the way native Americans were portrayed as savages, without the help and knowledge of indigenous people, most settlers wouldn’t have done so well. Along with the beans and tomatoes, it was native Americans who had developed the potato and corn. These were things that were unknown in Europe.

Awwww no way!!! That’s amazing tho I’d love to see the pic! It’s such a shame it’s closed down - gutted because it’s a wonderful looking property!! I wonder what happened?!

The breakfast pancake looked so big but lovely. Fabulous scenery on the way to Laughlin and the pioneer looked so authentic. I want to play the pumpkins, well done on the win xxx
