After watching Wemby get destroyed by Embid (career high 70 points) about a month ago, and then watching Sengun on Houston drop a career high of 45 points on him last night, I can say there is no way Wemby should win the DPOY award this year, other than by having it handed to him by biased voters. He'll get plenty of awards in the future, but until he learns how to stop other centers from getting career highs against him, being lauded as the best defender in the league seems very premature.

Valid, now I will say that great defenders can have great performances dropped on them. Here we speak on two specific examples and seeing how a player like Alex Caruso also had 71 dropped on him by Donnovan Mitchell or Devin Booker dropping 70 against Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown shows that generational scorers will find a way to get the ball into the basket. I will say that his weight is a topic of conversation, but also at his size it is harder to put on weight. So for Wemby we just can't use 2 games to decribe his season when he has been phenomenal all year.

This case for Wemby feels the same as the "yay points" case people make for 6MOY. Wemby has more blocks and steals because people go after him more than Gobert. Gobert has the lowest rim FGA% (aka he's detering the best shots by his simple pressence on the court) and rim fg% when he is on the court. Wemby has the talent to eventually win DPOY. But he isn't even making SAS good on defense when he's on the court. Gobert for DPOY isn't the same as the Tatum for MVP case. But Wemby for DPOY feels like a Lamelo Ball for MVP in 2022 case.
@4thQuarterP

I mean my argument clearly stated that the reason why I consider Wemby the DPOY was due to his team having a terrible perimiter defense. It is contrary for the Timberwolves, in which Rudy Gobert is surrounded by great perimiter and help defenders. This means that apart from being good himself at perimiter defense Wembanyama also is the biggest reason as to why the Spurs are not dead last in defensive rating. They send everybody to him and he carries the heaviest defensive load in the league.

@@4thQuarterP What have any number 1 overall picks (currently in the league) done for their franchises outside of Lebron? Rose was great but got injured. Zion has injury problems. Cade and Paolo are unknowns. Anthony Bennett and Greg oden were busts. John wall was good but never took the wizards anywhere. Kyrie Irving has been great, but he hasn’t won anything by himself, and now he kind of seems like a crazy person. Ben Simmons has flamed out horribly. Blake Griffen was good, but never the number 1 on a championship team. Also after his athleticism dwindled so did he. Anthony Davis needed Lebron to win one, which is fair, but he also is injured every other game. Markelle Fultz was a bust. Ayton is ok, but no where near better than luka. I didn’t mention Wiggins, but he has proven to be a good role player. Nowhere near as good of a talent as advertised. The point I’m making is that if you want to pick on Minnesota, that’s fine. But almost every other number 1 pick was either over hyped, or dwindled in production after injuries or their athleticism left. I’d argue that Anthony edwards has been developed better than Every player on this list. In fact he’ll be the same age Derrick rose was next year when rose won mvp. I know it’s easy to blame front offices, and I do agree with you. Front offices are to blame for a lot of players not developing. But targeting Minnesota is the wrong move here when I argue they’ve developed their number 1 picks better than 90% of the league over the last 15 years.
@4thQuarterP
@4thQuarterP 11 ай бұрын
@@noyou113 Yes I know but also situation matters. There are a lot of bad #1 overall picks but that is also determined by how your franchise runs the team. Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving are perfect examples of this. We have seen them be able to win championships and average phenomenal stats in the finals but they could not do that without some type of star next to them. Of course that is an extreme example because they got Lebron but what I am trying to say is that there is a gravity to the #1 overall pick in which a franchise puts the trust that they will be league altering superstars. We can see this as it has created some of the best players ever like Lebron, Kareem, O'Neal, Magic, Duncan, Iverson, Russell, Olajuwon... The only thing I am saying is that through patterns in history this is Minnesotas 2nd #1 pick and they still struggle to make the playoffs every year. I am in no way hating on Minnesota but from what they have shown even recently through the Gobert trade is that they need better decision making in their franchise.

@@4thQuarterP The Gobert trade is fine. People love to hate it. I won’t argue it as a good trade, but I will argue that Minnesota is in a good spot. They have arguably the best young star duo in ant and mcdaniels, and 2 all nba big men they can easily trade and get assets for if they want to pivot at any time. They own every other draft pick and by the time ant enters his prime in 6 years they will own all of their picks. Gobert fits in kats timeline, and honestly we never got to see those two play together. I will suspend judgement on that duo until we actually see it. Kat missed 60 games and wasn’t himself in the first 20 that he did play. Kat missed training camp with an illness in which he lost 20 pounds of muscle. The version of kat we saw last year was not the kat we saw the year before. As for Gobert he had a knee injury he picked up playing in European basketball and was playing hurt all season long. We saw the worst version of Gobert and kat, and people want to flame the trade. I say give it a chance. As for the Timberwolves they were down they’re best defender and best bench player against the nuggets and still gave them their toughest matchup in the playoffs. I think Timberwolves are in a good spot, and they can pivot at any time. Players like cafe Cunningham, jalen green, Scottie Barnes, and lamelo ball are all the same age as ant, and none of them even made the playoffs. Timberwolves are fine.
