That poor squash plant lol.... Have you looked on your squash under the leaf litter for vine bore eggs or signs of infection? I can see what could be possible entrance points on two stems. The little split mark with a discolored (yellowing/browning) spot around it is what I first look for, then as the bore grows it pushes mush out, which is the easiest way to find their location. The marks could just be regular damage but I tend to cut the stem/leaf off just to make sure. Run your finger under the plant stem because they can lay under there too, and if you get mush you know they're in there growing. Still looking good and green in this more of a mild summer.
@littlesaltyhomesteader6 күн бұрын
@@CopperLining yeah, I was diligently looking for eggs and picking them off, and missed one. That one is where you see the damage. I cut the plant down and I’ll just keep trying! Found out that container needs amendments anyway 😀

@@littlesaltyhomesteader The bore moth season is 'supposed' to be over. It's not lol. I had to buy long nets for the pumpkins this year after spending over an hour a day removing hundreds of eggs. They still got me on 3 of the 5 plants, had to perform a bit of surgery on them but should be right and heal up. @@patriciawalker1787 the weather this summer has been super bizarre. Usually, I expect everything but the okra to be fried, but it’s all still green and growing. So strange! I had a banger of a tomato harvest in May and June, so these I’m just keeping alive until fall 💕. Good luck with your garden!
@growyourownfood78148 күн бұрын
I think the secret to growing squash is to plant early before the squash bugs, vine bores and powdery mildew hits, starting in June. Sometime in June things seem to go south and most things just can not handle the heat and bugs. Tromboncino squash is supposed to be resistant to vine bores. I bought some seed but due to visit to hospital was not able to plant any to see how well they do. Could send you a couple of seeds if you want to try. Your tomatoes are really looking good for this time of year. Keep them alive and they should start producing in the fall. Do you have luck direct seeding broccoli this time of year? I was going to start my broccoli in a couple of weeks but start them indoors, and as soon as they sprout move them outside with afternoon shade and plant them in ground sometime in mid to late September.
@littlesaltyhomesteader8 күн бұрын
@@growyourownfood7814 thanks! I don’t have a trellis for the tromboncino, but I appreciate the offer! The early purple sprouting broccoli and spring broccoli rabe are both direct seeded, but the regular broccoli I am growing I started indoors. Hope that helps!

My bed is crazy right now. I have trimmed a good amount and it is still bananas. My thornburn Terra cotta plant was sooooo tiny as a seedling. It looked like it was going to be a micro dwarf tomato plant. I planted it and it is growing bigger (not huge like the others) my the tomatoes are so much smaller than I was expecting. Most of the slicer type tomatoes are so little. I had been fertilizing too. The only plant so far that is growing very large tomatoes for me is my Cherokee purple plant. I hope we can get some ripe ones before the birds and squirrels (and opossums, and raccoons) take them down. I am a weird person that likes to garden but really don’t like bugs and worms - they freak me out. I haven’t seen one yet but I feel like they may be hiding out because I see nibble marks and the little black peoples (are they droppings?).
