Hello John. First of all I'd like to thank you for posting this video here on KZfaq. I recently picked up this kit and am planning to use your video as my "point of inspiration."👍 While I been building various types of models for nearly 50 years I don't have any experience with achieving the chipped paint affect - i.e. the part where the silver undercoat starts to show threw in places. Anyway, I don't know if you have any spare time or would be interested in doing such, but if you have the inclination I'd love to hear about the procss/technique to achieve this effect. Again, great job on your build & thanks for posting!
@thunnus1964
@thunnus1964 6 ай бұрын
Hello! The technique that I used to replicate paint chipping is called the "hairspray" method. Pretty simple. After you lay down your base metal coat (I normally use Tamiya AS-12), you spray a few coats of hairspray. Once that is dry, you spray your normal camo color over it. After a few hours, take a stiff paintbrush moistened with water and start rubbing the area that you want the chips to appear. The water-soluble hairspray creates an unstable layer when wet and will start to loosen the camo paint in little chunks, revealing the metal color beneath. Works best with acrylics (both water and laqcuer-based). For more info, please refer to my build thread at forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?/topic/85604-132-hasegawa-n1k2-j-shiden-kai-343-45

Greetings, congratulations on your build! Jerry Crandall hired me to make the master patterns for the Eagle Editions cockpit that you used here, I am very pleased with your results! This very aircraft was Jerry's favorite, he would have been happy to see your model. Well done!
@thunnus1964
@thunnus1964 6 ай бұрын
Thank you! Those resin cockpits from Eagle Editions are the best upgrades for the Hasegawa 190 kits. And thank you for mentioning Jerry Crandall. His personal history with this aircraft is well documented and I used his books extensively as references on this build. I was extremely fortunate to have Mr. Crandall comment on my build as he was a regular member at largescaleplanes.com. In addition to making specific recommendations on the painting of the seat, the peculiar wood flaps and the lack of stencil markings on the undercarriage legs, he was graciously complimentary to the project overall. I was honored to have him actively participate in my build! May he Rest In Peace.

G'day - stunning build, John. 👍 Could I ask how you riveted the kit?? Specifically the model of riveting tool and wheel pitch? I've tried riveting my kit and the plastic is so hard the tool I'm using just rolls over the surface. And yes, I'm putting considerable pressure on the tool. Look forward to more builds. Cheers.
@thunnus1964
@thunnus1964 9 ай бұрын
Thank you sir! I used a rivet wheel tool. Specifically from Galaxy Tools in the 1.00mm pitch. Very similar to the RB Productions Rivet-R tool, which is unfortunately out of production, I believe. I've used both and commonly utilize the 1.00mm pitch for 1/32 aircraft builds. I've not had any problems with the teeth not penetrating the plastic but a firm pressure is needed.

Can you explain the step where you sprinkled a powder on the model for further weathering? Amazing job overall!
@thunnus1964
@thunnus1964 9 ай бұрын
Hello! The weathering technique that is shown at 5:48 mark in the video utilizes salt crystals to form a random mottle pattern mask. A diluted coat of a lighter color (usually grey or khaki) is sprayed over the salt. When the salt is removed, a faint wear pattern is left behind. I think it mimics the rain/water stains that you see on large objects left outside for long periods of time. For more information on this technique, please refer to my build log at... forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?/topic/85133-132-hasegawa-fw190d-13-yellow-10/page/24/

Thought I saw you there on Sat fishing solo. You were heading back out when we came in to get our other trolling motor battery. Definitey has been a tougher Barrett Season this year but we got really lucky on Sat and had a giant school of 2 to 5 lbers pretty much to ourselves for most of the afternoon. 20 years going to Barrett and I can definitely say that for every epic Barrett trip you can have, you can count on a "grind it out" day just as often.

Hey JP! Yeah, I thought I saw you guys at the dock! I was talking with Jules about the year and trying to hypothesize why the bite has not been better. Chalked it up to changing water levels, both rising and dropping. Tends to pull the fish off the shoreline and harder to find. Next time we'll have to say hello and exchange intel!

They haven't been maintaining the outboards very well this year, it seems. I always bring a trolling motor but I could not make any headway in the strong wind so I beached myself and waited for a passer-by to give me a tow.

I was out there on Saturday also. Spent most of our time in Pine. Did some buster chasing over there also. Got a 4 pounder doing that. Glad there was some cloud cover, made the day tolerable. Good fishing overall. Fish seem healthier this year. Almost everything we caught was 2 pounds with a handful of 3 pounders. We did a little better along the banks than you but you did better on the busters... Back on Sunday 8/6
