I guess it is haunting now that you mention it, but I always thought of it as having some kind of "nocturnal innocence" to it. The beginning kind of makes you feel cozy and safe in the dark as it crescendos to this fun "burst".

As an avid listener of music I think such techniques sound better when not overproduced (such as without the swing) and over incorporated (i.e repeated too many times and for too long that makes the song monotonous). These melodies must be timed perfectly in the song and should end up enhancing the overall feel of the song rather than taking over the majority of the track.

If you wanna make the song even better, go read the ray bradbury short story of the same name. Listening to the song after understanding the context behind the lyrics is absolutely haunting. Freaking masterpiece

It so lovely to see your enjoyment while making this music! Thanks for the tips, I usually make pop music with vocals but I've been meaning to get more instrumentals out so this is a great help!

The "all-bass-sounds-need-a-sub-layer"-people probably come from genres like Dubstep, where many bass sounds are so distorted or in other ways processed that you don't have a clean bass note anymore. In those cases, it's magical, what a separate Sub can do for the track. Just High-Pass your sound (best with some good quality linear EQ) and use a clean sub bass and match any automation.

The melody switch/tempo switch was insane back then. I likened it to polyrythms and my song Space Pendulum Swing was heavily influenced by this idea of changing tempos on layered melodies to create polyrythms into syncopations as well. Strobe is one of my all time favorite vibes in music.

For me, this method is just a quick fix because a) you don't know anything about mixing or b) you're too lazy. Why should you simply draw an envelope in the attack range of a wonderfully programmed bass sound and destroy the beautiful bass sound in the process? And all this just to make room for the base kick? You don't have to! Learn to EQ, learn to mix and edit the kick instead of using this method. It's just a shame about the bass.
