I live in Australia where there are birds commonly called magpies. While they have some similarities to the creatures you describe in America, they are definitely different species, I would like to hear your take on contrasting and comparing them.

Thank you for this. I had a wild Magpie friend when I lived high in the Rocky Mountains. We met when he was a a very small fledgling with attitude. He kept stealing shrimp bits from my bowl as I fed my Koi. Eventually he would eat out of my hand. We would actually talk to each other. He grew up to lead a group of about 14 Magpies and he did it well. On snow mornings he would tap on my bedroom window until I went to the kitchen and tossed out food to the crew. He lived about 5 years and came to say good bye in the last hour of his life. He died in flight as he flew over my garden wall. I cried for a long time. His name was of course "Maggie."

I take walks at a nearby pond. There are 6 ducks someone bought from the Tractor supply store and placed in this pond. They can't fly off. Recently I saw a baby duck that sort of hung out with them, but not always. I noticed it would dive under the water and stay for a long time. After about two weeks a small flock of hooded mergansers appeared. I believe this lone baby duck is a female hooded merganser. I hope so at least because I no longer see the lone baby duck. This group of hooded mergancers won't let me get close enough to get a good look through my binoclors. When I get on one side of the pond they swim to the other side.

Excellent video. I would just like to add that I dont think its fair to frame them as problematic when they are only seen as problematic to “human progress” bc a lack of habitat, they likely had even larger flocks precolonization, I think humans destruction of their habitat should be mentioned if we are bringing up ecological impacts. Thanks for sharing!

You aren't kidding about the magpie fledgling period. The behavior of fledglings is so absurd, it's hard to believe they grow into clever adult magpies.

I have a green, fat female one (we’ve taken to just calling her “Fatty”) that repeatedly dive bombs me or hovers menacingly in front of me whenever I’m outside. They are so territorial and it cracks me up. 😂 I like the little whistling chirp she makes when she dive bombs.

We have the same couple that's been coming almost every day most year round. They dissappear occasionally to go have a baby. But they come back ❤ it's so awesome. We put scoops of wild bird seed and they love it.

After birds, frogs are my favorite creatures so this was a nice treat. Someone else also mentioned doing one on Pacific Chorus Frogs (it's no longer considered a true treefrog and was moved like the Spring Peeper was). The species was also recently split into three species; Pacific, Sierran and Baja CHorus Frogs. Green Frog and California Red-legged Frog are also good candidates.

There is a family of sandhill cranes that reside in my local park in Florida. They will walk alongside me even with their baby. They'll chase away other birds and return to my side to continue walking. I hope they enjoy my company as much as I enjoy theirs

I hate them. They're such a nuisance, noisy here in Alberta, Canada. From morning till dawn the only thing you hear is magpie disturbing sounds without a minute of pause. I think that they're overpopulated and fight with each other for territory and food. There's absolutely no fun hearing them all day long.
