Saw this in an empty cinema in london. Its incredibly strange, which makes it interesting. Good score too.

Siskel would have hated this cause of non stop action and NO STORY this movie is revolutionary only because of effects if you want story watch Ghost in a shell that Matrix is badmsed off of Siskel and Ebert loved that.......Wachowskis stole that fron anime same as Black Swan, Inception, same as Nope man grow up Anime is still raising us 90s babies and is biggest influence of scifi the only original scifi is 2001 and Blade Runner every copied those 2

Merci encore. C'est gentil. J'apprécie.

Man, even legends can be wrong. This movie rocked. And the “toy war” scene that Ebert was pontificating about is an excellent way to embody WWII. A lot of good people didn’t want to fight, but they found that they had to in order to survive. Fascism is existential to humanity.

The Matrix ties itself up nicely in one movie but you cant really judge the story without seeing 2 and 3 (which are much worse movies but they pay off the plot)
@tedshep2 ай бұрын
These guys really struck out on their reviews. I saw The Matrix in theaters when it came out and it was 100% obvious that it was an instant classic and a generational film. I was in my late 20s and not just a wide eyed kid dazzled by special effects and action. I saw it multiple times then. I am surprised these guys basically just gave it a golf clap. Totally missed the boat.
@JB-yb4wn12 күн бұрын
The whole fight scene in the lobby was iconic. Good to see that these guys are no longer in business.
@quarantinebored14278 күн бұрын
But they still gave it a good review. Maybe if the film was released before Eberts favorite film of 1998 “ dark city”. He would’ve had a different opinion since the film is somewhat similar.
@tedshep8 күн бұрын
@@quarantinebored1427 Respectfully disagree. They gave it a tepid review. Ebert said “the story was kind of a let down” and he only liked it for the effects and visuals. The other guy said (multiple times) they “tried” but “didn’t succeed“. Maybe they gave it two thumbs up, but it was definitely not a good review. And they completely missed the cultural impact it had. And I’m not just saying that in hindsight. It was blatantly obvious when it came out. They were out of touch and missed its significance.

I still love The Matrix but I have to kind of agree with Ebert in that the story and characters could have been better realized, especially in how it dealt with concepts of reality, freedom and purpose. Movies with more fleshed out scripts that came out the previous year, like Dark City, The Truman Show, Antz, Pleasantville, etc. explored these ideas better I thought and in much more interesting ways.

I love how they sey about "Crimes" is a "movie of the 80s". Well, maybe one of the Woody Allen's finest works. The sadness, the bitterness, the darkness of that movie is something that grabs your soul. I only didn't like the Allen's part of the story, the funny stuff. The Martin Landau's part is enough

The Matrix turns 25! Made $171 million domestically and $463.5 million worldwide Highest earning Easter movie opening ever Many of its accolades include Oscar nominations for editing, sound effects, sound, and visual effects This is the movie that truly made the Wachowskis household names taking inspiration from comic books, anime, and French philosophers It also reinvigorated the sci-fi genre of filmmaking A rare example of an action movie making people think The film bears a striking resemblance to Dark City yet that movie failed box office wise not gaining appreciation until later But here the Wachowskis present their ideas and concepts covered in tight leather attire, big special effects, heady material, and plenty of Jesus symbolism Plenty of allusions of 'Alice in Wonderland' The special effects although somewhat dated really revolutionized modern filmmaking techniques Earlier attempts have started slo-motion but this is the movie that made it infamous with bullet time even so much as making into pop cultural references like other films, tv shows, cartoons etc. There's a lot of clever analogies, metaphors for gender identity, self-actualization, Samsara, The Cave allegory, terrific action, intellectualism, a terrific score by Don Davis, Biblical and Buddhist influences, and this thankfully paved the way for 3 sequels including a mini-movie collection, two video games even books of literature digging into the philosophy What is real?, are we living in a true reality or something else?, how many of us has had dreams we were so sure weren't real?, fate gives the idea that we are not in control of our own lives, to deny our own impulses is to deny the very thing that makes us human, maybe human beings are like a virus that grows, consumes until it destroys everything, mind over matter still is stronger Okay yes the main leads are bland devoid of personality and human emotion But thanks to 'The Matrix' action movies have changed and influenced future moviemakers for days to come while also being complex and challenging
