That was a fantastic video! I just acquired an old 1988 Sportster 883 out of a friend's barn. It hasn't run for about 10 years, No Spark! The electronic pickup is kinda gooey, almosted melted looking. I was considering going with a points conversion before watching your video, but now I am 100% convinced this is for me. I am from the generation where everything had points and we made it work. The link you provided is for the year range before mine. Do you have a suggestion for a 'kit' for the 88? Thanks again for a great channel. Wish me luck!

Good morning 🌅, This is how I use to wire my bike back in the 60/70s, Triumph Bonneville, Norton Dominator, and Commando, this was my first Chopper, then in the mid 90s , HD 1200 sportster, FXR 1340 , then 2000 Deuce, I had to sell it in 2019, and moved from the Uk to France, I have just bought a 2003 Deuce, bad problems with the alarm system, I’ve problems switching it off neutralising it, to the point where I have to remove the battery needs, I’ve spoken to HD, and they told me I cannot do anything with it apart from replacing some bits, Have you any idea how I can bypass the alarm system and away with the key fob?, So all I need to do is put the key in ignition turn it on and start it., this was my first one I had worked, never bothered with an alarm just had a very large chain and padlock, I don’t know anything about electronics. I can wire a bike where you suggest , as I’ve done it years ago, but there is a lot more to them nowadays, well over my head, and I’m now in my 70s, Keep up the great work if you can help be appreciated, France,

I've ordered 2 of them now and they've both had the static noise in voice recordings on Laptop, Desktop and GoPro Hero 3+ (I know, it's an old model). I'd have put your list in reverse order. For me, the XS-650 is the greatest bike ever to chop, and if I ever own another H-D it'll be a Sportster or a (not on your list but) UL. As for the XS struggling (I don't think you used that word but it's what you meant) on the highway, yours might have. Mine doesn't. As for big twins, I bought a basket-case '77 Shovelhead back in 1980 and before I even rode it, I had an S&S 93ci Sidewinder kit (the latest and greatest thing at the time) put in. Nowadays I'd have to ask the question - since when is 1200cc not a big enough motor for a bike? I've seen Boss Hoss bikes with 572ci Chevy engines. Unless you find yourself in a pissing contest, is there any need for that?
@greasesgarage7 күн бұрын
Because of the size of the bike. The xs650 is just a physically small bike. If you’re 6’ or over, you’re just not gonna fit on it comfortably

Hey Grease your channel is definitely one of top watches. I have a1982 Shovel Head that I’m thinking about chopping but I have had a lot of back surgeries and not sure how well I would make out on a rigid. I have short shocks on it now and I can deal with it. Would love to have a foot clutch after watching your video but my right leg goes to sleep now and then. I don’t want to end up like the guy on the tv show Laugh In. You’re probably to young to remember that show but a guy riding a tricycle would fall on his side and couldn’t get up. Ok bud I ramble on way too long. You take care and ride safe keep the videos coming.

I switched over to points on my 1980 XLH 1000 Ironhead chopper that I built in my garage. I’m having some issues and I have a couple questions. The bike does not enjoy higher RPM/ freeway speed which is a problem because I’d like to get back to commuting. As of now 4th gear sputters unless I shift from 3rd to 4th at high RPM and it does not enjoy staying at higher RPM. Any suggestions? My next question is about spark plugs. I’ve read that resistor plugs aren’t good and that I should drop the gap from 40 to 30 with non resistor plugs. I’m currently running NGK 7022’s and I don’t know what non resistor plug will replace that correctly. Again, any suggestions appreciated. The last question would be regarding timing. I hear static timing a lot but I haven’t adjusted points on a Harley aside from these and I followed along in the Shovel head video you did about points conversions so I’m not sure if the hesitation is a sign to advance/ retard the timing or maybe start over and reset the points completely. Let me know what you think. I love the Ironhead and I really wanna get it back on the road.
@greasesgarage7 күн бұрын
I do gap my plugs at .28 for the same reason, someone had told me a while ago that points require that smaller gap. I’ve had good luck with it. As far as which plugs I couldn’t say, I run NGK plugs I’ll have to check the model number when I get home. I would think the hesitation is a sign to advance but maybe try just a light touch advance and see if it helps or hurts, let me know what you see
@FernandezCycles7 күн бұрын
@@greasesgarage I appreciate the quick reply! I’ll definitely try a touch of timing advance along with the smaller plug gap and see what she does.

Yes. So you’ll put the ones over the studs onto the studs. Then place the assembly against the clutch basket with a few of the nuts. You should now be able to sneak the other springs under the plate from the side and snap them into place. May need pliers to push them into place from the side but that’s how I used to do it
