55 year old here. I stopped decorating after 25 years running my own small business working on my own. I gave up a few years ago as my knees & back were giving me to much pain. I never didn't hardly do hardly any big site work as it was all domestic. I've now been running a small courier business. It's a different game but still hard but I'm not in that much pain anymore.

I’m a self employed painter and decorator solo worker and I have private customers only. It took a long time but I eventually became well established locally (every customer within a 7 mile radius). It is still very difficult and it does take over my life more than I’d like but I earn a fair wage and I’m always booked in advance of around 3 months. It’s definitely not an easy trade especially when you have pride in your work and it isn’t always appreciated how skilled you need to be to do this job. It’s never too late to put your skills to better use if you’re not getting what you deserve from your efforts. I wish you good luck in any future ventures you may take and it’s sometimes the jobs and not the job that’s not working. Hope you find the right thing for you!

Gave up house bashing in 2008 when the crash came and apart from 3-4 houses since never went back , crying out for painters where i am , my rate is £20hr 9 hours a day painting hospitals and schools mostly , do my days work and thats that , im 55 in 5 months and realised grafting on price and taking a bit of pride in your work got you nowhere . Just keep looking for other opportunities and maybe realise the days of chasing money have been and gone , your health and family are far more important . Best of luck to you
