When I’m camping, I use the front of the tent where I can stand up to get dressed. There’s a mesh door and I do try to be discreet, but if someone were to be intentional, they might get a glimpse. While I’m dressing, I murmur to myself, “be European, be European ”! 😂

Spot on! My husband and I are Canadians who live in Croatia 75% of the time (and travel within Europe) and find so, so many quirky cultural differences which sometimes make us giggle like inverted light switches and pull chains on toilets, other times not so much (such as smoking). Differences can be hard to get accused to (nudity). But differences are also what makes the world fascinating and enlightening! Having an open mind is crucial, yet one needn't compromise beliefs or standards, either. Travel is the best form of education there is. Thank you!

Does one ever think you are contributing to bad tourism by doing air bnbs vs hotels, it takes away housing from locals. Also its like no one has ever heard of a midsize checkin? This obession with packing in a carryon is funny to me.

Short term rentals in general have helped contribute to overtourism, gentrification, and increasing rents in some places, but I do think it’s unfair to say this is always the case or Airbnb is an explicit blight on society. For example in the place shown in this video, we actually stayed in a local’s place while they were on vacation. I hear you though, it used to be the cheap way to stay in a quaint local place and now many times it’s more expensive.

Those two option toilets are more common now, I've had a few apartments with them. Also anyone who has ever been to a club or nice resturant has seen a bathroom attendant.

*There is no such thing as "airlines have got really good at making sure you overpay".* The price is what people are willing to pay. The notion that the airlines are tricking customers into 'overpaying' is absurd. You have access to the pricing, and options. You have knowledge of special promotions, and rewards programs. You agreed to the price you were willing to pay for the service provided. *No one tricked you into overpaying....THAT IS THE PRICE.*

Excellent list! All of these things can really surprise Americans, and even for those of us who have lived there in the past, it's good to be reminded.

Great video! I'm 6'-1" with a bodybuilder-type physique so elevators, when they have them, are soooo small!!! It became a joke between my wife and I.

Floor numbering is mixed in Europe. Some countries use the American style, while others use the British style. Elevators can be especially confusing, as pressing '0' usually takes you to the basement. You press '0' expecting to go to the reception, but when the door opens, you find yourself in a dark room with lots of piping, as it's the basement. Therefore, hotels often label the elevator buttons with 'reception' because too many people end up in the basement.

As an American I have always thought 0 was a basement? Usually reception is floor 2 sometimes 3.

4:58 "and their windows tend to be a little bit different" - i was in Vienna Austria a couple weeks ago and the AirBnB i stayed at had those exact same kind of windows. They are awesome!

Noise cancelling over the ear headphones. Ear plugs or even turned off earbuds provide enough muffle for the white noise on airplanes.

When booking a hotel room in Europe the difference in having an actual AC and not is if the hotel says their AC is climate controlled or not. Climate controlled = No thermostat in the room. Air conditioning = yes. Most hotels will also provide you with a standing fan when requested at climate controlled ones.

As an Australian, we find the obsession that Americans have with carry on only as quite “interesting”. Carryon in Australia, New Zealand and most of the South Pacific can only weigh 7kg (15 pounds) plus one personal item. And expect this to be weighed at the gate. When Aussies are travelling to Europe or the US, we are commonly travelling for 4-6 weeks. So travelling with only 7kg of stuff for that period of time is often unrealistic.

Hi Nick! I bought the SAMSONITE Freeform 21-inch carry-on spinner, which I loved for its being lightweight and its polished (albeit very basic) appearance. It weighs 6.5lbs, but the overall dimensions are 23 x 15 x 10 inches - far too large for standard international airline carry-on requirements. I sadly have to return it - it’s boxed up right now awaiting dispatch. If only they had a version of this with the correct carry-on size, I would say it would be the best lightweight hard shell carry-on!

i love all your reviews, they are so thorough. Can you please do a review of the Monos Hybrid Trunk? I've been looking at all the "lightweight" trunk style luggages, and Monos seems to be the size that I prefer (some of them are so bulky that I'm afraid they might be considered oversized). Specifically I'm wondering how they roll and perform when full.

No one needs the big checked bag. However, most people feel obligated to especially when it comes with the ticket. I went to Africa a few years ago for a few weeks, and my entire family brought 2 big bags each thankfully they didn't didn't leave one behind, but I only brought my camera backpack and a small carry on on wheels bag, and mother of God I will never go back, seeing them struggle to get to their rooms, get the bags onto the 4x4 on the way to the hotel, not to mention all the crap they never used was literally just insane!
