I didn’t skim every single comment but I’m surprised to not see anyone mentioning my hometown boys Living Sacrifice. One of the OG Christian metal bands. If it weren’t for their music, I’m not sure how else the Lord would’ve got through to me in my teens. 😅

Good job. There’s a reason why CS Lewis is one of the two Christian authors quoted across all denominational lines. Henri Nouwen is the other.

Christian metal bands? Are you kidding me? Where in the bible does it teach that it’s ok for Christians to look, and sound like, and imitate Satans crowd? If you had an honest belief in the Bible it would actually have an effect on what your life looks like. You all need to put in some serious thought and prayer concerning these things!

No style of music is actually 'wrong' and Biblically speaking Satan was the 'anointed cherub' (Ezekiel 28:14) meaning he could have led all worship in all different ways and forms. You speak about Satan's 'crowd' but Satan is never actually described in the Bible and your intepretation of what his crowd looks like is your own flesh-made understanding. Tattoos? Piercings? Beards? Is that your interpretation of Satan's crowd? Many of these bands are formed once they have been saved, we cannot condemn people for their past lives as once they committed to God their old life is behind them. In the song Dominus, written by War of Ages, they sing "Father in Heaven, you are worth to receive, all honor, all glory, all power, all praise". In the song Sleeping Lotus, written by Convictions, they sing "God, water these roots and drown out teh doubt. Nourish my purpose, turn me inside out. Illuminate Your design, I'll leave the old me behind". In the song Lotus, written by Bloodlines, they sing "Yahweh, let Your voice be heard. I will spend my days declaring your name. I will suffer, all for the sake of Your word. I don't know about you but those words don't seem blasphemous, they speak in love for the Lord God - They're words of praise to the only being truly worthy of worship. Philippians 4:8 “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.” If heavy metal produced by Christian musicians falls under this description, then it's simply down to whether you like it or not.

So i'm a bit late and don't know if you'll see this, but i've been raised with a diverse range of cultures and beliefs (Greek, Latin, Christian, Islamic, Norse, and many more). My favourite is Greek mythology, but I love them all really (even tho I'm not really a believer). Anyways, my question is about a story, you probably haven't heard of it, Mariken van Nieumeghen. It's a Dutch play from the medieval times, and it's about a girl Mariken who eventually travels with the devil for 7 years. The beautiful thing about this story is that she sees her sin, and tries to get away. The devil throws her up in the air, almost killing her, but Maria saves her. So, Mariken decides to change her life and she spends 21 years in a monastery, before she is forgiven by God. The story is much more elaborate, of course. I was wondering, because that's at least what I took from this video, why you can be forgiven, if you haven't proven to earn that privilege. You seemed to sat that you only have to trust in His grace, because everyone sins anyway. Love the vid tho, it felt as if Kurtis couldn't really express what he meant (also in later podcasts episodes) and I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel. I have learned so much from just one video alone, so thank you really <3

Love this, Wolves at the Gate got me into metal in the first place and is still my all time favorite band, mainly because of how powerful and worshipful the lyrics are. I do have to say I almost lost it when you called Impending Doom a black metal band XD Definitely not black metal, mostly death-core with first album being death-metal. But absolutely awesome band and definitely God-honoring band!

my top Christian metal band is Pantokrator... their sound and is amazing... Wedlock is my favorite... they also covered "our God is an awesome God". one awesome description i heard once... God created music, the devil perverted it. i also dig Brandon Lakes "Count'em". its got a little heavy sound to it that i hope he explores writing more music with a heavier touch.

Demon Hunter is my all time favorite Christian Metal Band ever! HolyName is young & is making a great impact. Living Sacrifice is another pioneer of the early Christian Death Metal genre

I have come to enjoy Holy Name, and I like Become the Archetype a great deal. Another band is Oh, Sleeper (who are openly honest about the fact that not all members are Christian), but the some members are, and they have written a lot of explicitly Christian themes in their metalcore. Lastly, Impending Doom is technically deathcore - very heavy, very intense. Really good. Finally, if you were looking for interesting Christian black metal (or "unblack metal" as some insist), try Panegyrist, Lo Ruhamah, or Reverorum Ib Malacht.

Bro there is a plethora of bands that are "Christian" both thematically and literally (sadly most of them are no longer active). I don't necessarily think you have to literally say "I'm Christian" to actually be one. Lol. Not sure where this vid was going but there is a lot of bands, not just these 5. Lol.

A very late comment, but I so appreciate the thoughtful reasoning and spirit behind the title assertion. I have been thinking about this idea a long long time I continue to feel that its possible that almost every musical worship experience could benefit from including very heavy music, for example opening with some heavy metal dirge like lament. I think at times it is THE most authentic style and mode of worship music. Plus, praise Him with loud shouts, trumpets, and loud clanging cymbals, right? I also am fascinated with the times, like at Mt Sinai, when God cloaks himself in darkness and shakes the mountains violently, communicating to his people something important about his nature. But essentially I just love the thought of Jesus wanting to cast out the widest possible net of invitation to anyone who is feeling the extremes of emotion and circumstance and musically including them. At some point in their journey, surely everyone can identify with and recognize feelings of anger, despair, and heavy darkness within their soul and we can have a relationship with a God who already knows the depths of our being and longs for us to bring each and every part... not sanitized and presentable, but naked and exposed with all its chaos that the Spirit may hover over it, speak light and life, and bring forth real beauty. And sometimes the right music helps us surface that stuff. However, even accounting for stylistic preferences and psychological dispositions I think a challenge remains to all of us to be able to traverse the spectrum of music styles and appreciate how each can evoke or resonate with different parts of ourselves at different moments -- I think it shows a kind of maturity and growth. Whereas I think a challenge remains for all of who can only listen to one genre and in a sense wallow in its emotional range and tone, but never move beyond it.

I'd say For Today & Sleeping Giant are sorely missing, except they're no longer active, so I guess it's alright they weren't mentioned. War Of Ages however deserve mentioning. (I'd say Living Sacrifice as well.)

Fit for a king , demon hunter and skillet are my favorite christian band inthe category metal ( even if skillet is less a metal band now )
