I count our ADHD work as health lol so I didn’t have to add yet another subject. Because I feel your nervousness every year that I’m doing too much. I'm sorry, I had no idea your name was Kara or Cara or x, sorry for the misspelling. It's so nice to put a face and a name with your channel because I do love your content. One of the things that has been bothering me in the homeschool community lately is the mass pop up of adhd diagnoses and everyone making an almost daily video on it. I'm not dismissing your children, you, or others, but within the past few days, it's been like wow. I think back to the mid 90s when adhd was overdiagnosed and the mass medicating of children with Ritalin and Adderall. But I also know that over time we "now" know more about adhd than we ever have in the past and that there is more statistical reporting and studies being done on it. It's interesting to me though that the recent studies have been more on adhd versus add and we're not seeing as many add diagnoses. I've lived with adhd for years medicated and unmedicated, but I applaud you for having this candid discussion about adhd and for taking the time to share your thoughts and ideas.

Thanks for watching and commenting! I made this video in part because I’ve seen a lot of ADHD vids pop up lately that I think might give misinformation. My understanding on ADD vs ADHD is that they are one in the same now. Like instead of ADD it is now ADHD with an inattentive subtype or a combined subtype.

I so appreciate this video! Kids are waiting for us to help them. I think you nailed it with that. It’s not a child’s fault their brain works differently. It is our responsibility as both the parent and educator to learn how to best meet them where they’re at. There’s no magic fix it. It requires time, effort and a lot of reading! There’s a lot of negativity surrounding ADHD. It’s perceived as a deficiency. A child with ADHD can absolutely achieve the same things a neurotypical child can, they just may need some additional support and scaffolding to get there. They don’t need dumb downed or oversimplified work. They need to be seen for who they are and how they best learn.

I agree with the point; I'm part of the problem. Once I realized I was part of the problem, I began researching and changing things around in our homeschool. Whether it means shortening the lessons, taking a break, coming back later, or changing the curriculum. Yes! I feel like some of it is FOMO for the parent, maybe? It’s hard to realize you or your kids aren’t like “everyone else” in your friend circle. Sometimes we see videos of neurotypical families like you mentioned and the parent is able to just assign things and they actually get results from their NT child. Yay for them! It’s hard when your family is ND and it doesn’t work like that for us. BUT we need to be able to do some self reflection and realize we aren’t typical and make some curriculum adjustments. There isn’t an adhd curriculum. There isn’t one size fits all. So to up and change everything simply because you just joined the adhd club officially is really a waste of your time and money. I have to adjust curriculum and scaffold everything we use…. Which I’d be doing even if we didn’t have a dx. No intended shade at anyone. But parenting and homeschooling ND kids, for me at least is all about scaffolding and being selective of people and events/experiences as I know we don’t fit into the typical world sometimes. And that’s ok. It’s a mindset adjustment! I think sometimes the parents who change all the things maybe do need to do that just to go through the motions, and they’ll come around eventually. I think it’s the newness of the dx maybe that makes them panic. But like you said… we’ve been doing it for years and the dx is the only thing new here. None of it should be a surprise.
@trishapler
@trishapler 14 күн бұрын
Also to add that adhd is hard and parenting/teaching someone with it is hard. I feel like that’s not acknowledged enough. Solidarity to the adhd club 😅. I had a hard time in the beginning (before dx) because it seemed like we were the only family struggling. It felt like people just didn’t want to talk about it. Years later, most of my friend circle is now realizing they’re part of the club now, too. lol. So just know you’re not alone out there 🤗 some people are slower to pick up on things 😂

100% yes. My ADHD kids are so challenging - the struggle is real. BUT, when it comes to homeschooling issues, I'm usually the problem. 95% of our less-than-ideal school days are because I'm not prepared, or not able to regulate myself after a morning full of kid meltdowns. We are 5 years and 3 years post diagnoses for my older kids, so none of this is new to us. We've tried lots of things and I really haven't felt that most of the common "how to homeschool ADHD kids" suggestions were helpful (at all).
