I would love to know what camera this was filmed with. Looks like VHS, but the camera doesn't look like it has a CCD chip in it - hence the muted colours and colour bleeding. One of the first video cameras I ever used in school didn't - it wasn't a camcorder (camera/recorder in one) it was a camera with a separate recorder. The school did have a Panasonic M10 camcorder, which did have a CCD chip, and we only used the old camera when the camcorder wasn't available.

Great video. Just goes to show how well things were done back in the day. Now the police would of had the road closed for hours.

Not sure,as you can tell from the video,it took me by surprise !.It makes me think that was 1S79 and the one with 47519 was some sort of additional train.I must have asumed at the time the stopper was 1S79.

Railgen archive have 47519 working 1E63 1448 Southampton to Newcastle as far as Birmingham on Sunday 6th.. hard to see the number on the video. Maybe 599? wonder what train that was as did have sleepers on so wouldn’t have been 1L40 Leeds. There was a 1S38 2323 KGX to EDB but that was supposed to be HST. Would love to see more night scenes if you have any, was cracking railway in the 80s at night

@@CS-vr7uo Yes ,I've got more night video,I'll post them as I come them,my notes from the time were a bit haphazard so I'm not sure of exactly what is on each tape !,unfortunately quite a lot of my notes were lost when I left home in 1990.I've got some of diverted liners at Grantham in 1989 with pairs of 86s somewhere on a tape.It could be 599 on the sleeper,on my scribbled notes it looks like 519 but that now seems quit unlikely.I do have the notes of a deceased friend,I'll have to have a look through them and see if he made any record of that night.

That was good that. I spent many overnights at Newark back then and wish I had video evidence. Wonder why 1S79 stopped, wasn’t booked to. Maybe 1L40 HST was cancelled?

Lack of AWS systems on that part of the network, no warnings of yellow or Red signals audible or visual in the cab, even though some of BR had it fitted. Mainly because of colour lights and a mixture of old semaphore signals.

I filmed the footage in 1988 with an analogue Ferguson VHS-C tape camera.I have vastly improved the quality and clarity by using Da Vinci Resolve and Topaz Video AI.It takes a bit of work to find the best settings but I think the outcome is well worth the effort and it seems almost if I had filmed the footage only yesterday.

Why is the pointy end facing the wrong way to start with?
@GDGRailway47712
@GDGRailway47712 9 күн бұрын
I'm guessing this was early load testing. With no remote cab on a DVT at the south end the loco has to run around in order to drag the rake from the front. The 91 was designed to run from either end, the only difference being that the blunt end is limited to 110mph. As the Mk1 coaches in that rake were limited to 100mph anyway, it didn't matter which end was leading on the 91.

Good catches with the 91s, especially the test train, with the two 91s in push mode! The HST, with the 91 hauling blunt end first, may have simply been a TDM failure, preventing the 91 pushing the train. In an edition of Motive Power Monthly, I think August 1989, it shows one such operation, at Doncaster, on a Friday, so this could well be the same train as in the photo!
