I hate all people who own an aircraft like this…but only because I’m totally jealous. OK, OK, just kidding about the “hate” part but I’m still jealous.

A few details. The Chance Vought F4U Corsair's bent, or inverted gull-wing design was necessary to accommodate the aircraft's large propeller and short landing gear. The Corsair was intended to be a carrier-based aircraft for the U.S. Navy, so the landing gear needed to be short and sturdy. The wings were also needed to be brought down to provide enough clearance for the propeller, which was needed to take full advantage of the aircraft's powerful Pratt & Whitney R2800 Double Wasp engine. One additional detail was that the engine (and prop) had so much torque that the plane tended to counter rotate just after leaving the flight deck. Pilots learned very quickly to counter that tourque with the stick as soon as the wheels left the deck. A fabulous plane never the less.

Many pilots crashed trying to land on carriers, became land based. Breathtakingly beautiful plane.

@@RexFeral55 I worked on the bridge of carriers in the Navigation Department. Often we would do training duty of Southern Cal for new pilots to complete their carrier qualifications. Thankfully we never had an incident. But the aborted landings were always fun to watch. And... once they qualified for day landings, they got to do it again at night. Even better to watch from the bridge. But the bottom line...these were all amazing young pilots lading on a very tiny platform. Go Navy.
