The whole outdoor setting reminded me a lot of the first time I saw welding in person. Boy Scout camp when I was about 12 or 13. Deep on a private ranch in the Sierra foothills. One of the dad's trucks broke a front suspension part. One of the other dads was a welder and had some of his work stuff in his truck (helmet & rods) The put the trucks nose-to-nose in a small circle and daisy chained the batteries with jumper cables. Made a great 48 volt 200 amp welding rig.

Im thinking i must misunderstand what its for. Because if its what it looks like, welding the shaft in should work. The part thats welded into the disc doesnt have to be 1-15/16. It can be a large enough diameter to guarentee its stronger than the 1-15/16 shaft without wasting that much metal. Dont get me wrong, I totally get why hes doing it that way. The customer said to turn it out of a single piece, so the customer gets what the customer wants. And I totally get why the customer wants it that way. Because the OEM says to make it that way. So you do what the OEM says because they probably have a good reason for saying it. Generally, when the experts say to do something a particular way, and it seems that the "so called experts" dont know what they are taling about, it really just means the problem is far more complicated than you realize, and you dont understand it neatly as well as you think. So i suspect i don't really understand the problem. Because it looks to me like you could cut that disk out of a piece of plate, then clean it up, bore maybe a 4" hole. You would cut a shaft that was about 2-1/8" or so and and weld in the shaft. The weld would then be at such a radius that it would be far stronger than the shaft. Then you would clean everything up so its all concentric. But since they are not doing that, there must be something thats not obvious.

Do you know what chemicals run through this exchanger? We ran some pretty nasty hazardous stuff through our plate exchangers at the last chemical plant I operated at, sure wouldn't be touching them with my bare hands.

Doesn't the job need bolting together and re drilling down the center now you have reduced the size of the hole by cutting it in half leaving it out of round

You said you really didn’t trust your boring bar set up. If you think it’s out of speck, why not just take it apart and fix what ever is wrong with it to bring this equipment back to standard machining order? Heck, cheaper to fix than buy another, don’t you think? Just a suggestion from an old man. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with me.😊

For a second I thought you were not going to get it seated. The boring bar extending out may have also gave you a very small taper for that last depth. Was fun back in the day for rebuilding the variable speed sheave with worn pin and holes for a combine.

Oh Man that Hough Payloader brings back memories. Ran one for many years before Super storm sandy drowned ours. Love hate relationship with that old girl. Loved what she could still do at her age with both the 4 yard bucket and the forks. Hate because too many openings in the cab so full of wasps in the summer and cold as anything in the winter while moving snow with it blowing into the cab. Lol. Glad to see one still running. Take care of her.

Yeah, it’s sad to see a business like This close and I know it’s due to China because a lot of the stuff that’s made in that shop could be done in China for 1/4 of the price and it’s also do to the man in the White House, removing all of the tariffs and restrictions from China so they’re back in full swing. I bet The shop was doing pretty good between 2015 and 2020

Genuine question. 🙋♂️ Can you ever set up multiple staggered cutters to remove 3 times the material in one pass? Or does this put too much stress on the motor?

I dug a lake with one of these, about 40 years ago. Besides making sure you don't let the cables unspool on you, you have to adjust the brakes for the cable spools, during prolonged use. You have to expand the shoes, as the drums heat up. And, you have to loosen them up, before you stop for the day. If you don't, they will be all bound up when the drum cools down, and shrinks. Failure to adjust the spool brakes will result in the inability to hold the load. Since there is no hydraulic assist, it's important to have them adjusted correctly. When your rear end starts to come out of the seat, because you are pushing so hard, it's time to adjust them. 😆

One of these days I need to pick up a lathe and a mill, I don’t do anything nasa precision, but I need the ability to turn rotors, drums, cut wheel centers, mill heads, bore cylinders and cases on atvs. Luckily all those tasks have a higher tolerance for small inaccuracies. The biggest problem is finding a used lathe with at least a 14” swing that isn’t 12’ long
