Had someone bring in a powered sub with a blown 80v 3300uf cap. Promptly replaced it, powered it up, and that thing exploded just like this video . This is when I learned to always check to make sure a rectifier's diode didn't take also crap.

Second option. The image intensifier has an input window that is coated with a chemical that "converts" the incoming photons into electrons. Those electrons get accelerated into a phosphor screen by a high voltage, this video is of the phosphor output screen. It's likely that the dial is not active enough anymore to be seen with just the eye, but an image intensifier tube might still pick up the few photons the dial can produce.
