I think those indicate how much material the player was lead of.

Not that it matters much, but didn't Magnus have Bb7 check, followed by Qg2 mate right at the end of the first game. He played Qf2 instead. The game was won anyway, and the guy had no time. I was a bit surprised because I thought Magnus was specifically setting him up for that mate. Maybe Magnus was just trying to be fancy and mate him in a more unique way.

No. Actually magnus did lose 4-6 to nihal. Quite surprising but at the same time Nihal is the 3rd strongest blitz player, online in my book. I said it weeks ago, that kid is diffferent for speed chess. I dont know why hesnt in SCC but next year i guess it can happen

It's not impossible, you never know. Definitely too early to say yes or no, but he's a talented youngster. Magnus was way off though for whatever reason. Quite a few surprising blunders. Nihal is still very strong though, no doubt.

When someone threatens me, I retreat or overprotect, with Magnus he responds with a greater threat usually through some tactic . I rarely see him on the defensive.

I think maybe Magnus is getting the c4 square for the knight. Also black taking the pawn opens up the file for white to blacks doubled backwards pawns, which will be a long term weakness. That would be my guess.
