Surfed it in 1978 ... still have scars, one just above my left eye ... board tip. Stitched up with needle and cotton thread by the local tailor. No anaesthetic, just tequila. No-one on the beach - only surfers in the water. No leg ropes. No airport, no internet. Wipeouts there always the same. Bad.

I surfed Petecalco in Mexico in the same area back in the 70s - which was a similar wave. These waves like NF is on, I can only imagine the power. On 7ft Petecalco any wipeout pinned you on the cobblestone bottom and popped your ears. I got my first case of swimmer ear there. A wave like Nate's could easily kill you. Much respect to these warriors

any petacalco stories? always was interested in the place, not much info about. They say the jetty for river destroyed it.. but where did the energy go if it had a similar canoyon funnel?

@@87gn199 The surf was great there, but a few Californians were trying to act as if they owned it and threatened us not to take pictures or videos. We camped on the beach and surfed it for a week or more. very spectacular like the article when Eric Penny and Craig Naughton went there. Years later I read an article that said the government and Oaxaca officials decided to terrace the surrounding mountains as an erosion control project, and all the runoff silted in the break - like Cape St Francis. I bet it's still good. It's so far south in Mexico that we felt pretty vulnerable. There were two marine looking big muscle bound guys from Wobasso with big wave guns that sort of chuckled at us with our 7' beach break boards. They watched me a couple times and said - not bad after the best takeoff side slip in the tube I had on the trip. We were riding single fins/no leashes.

A drainage project was said to have destroyed the break. Probably silted in the former cobblestone bottom. It was epic
