Honestly, for those of us who have ADHD, our patience is short. There was way too much rambling. 😢

Thanks to you Sara, I have made HUGE progress! I declutter my big spaces, ie:Tables- that serve dual purposes, every day. Shelves once a week. Cupboards once every two weeks. I’m aiming for minimalism, but understand I may never live in a Japanese style house!😂

This is a wonderful list of suggestions! Thank you! I just thought I'd add one more suggestion to the ten minute idea. Set the timer for 9 minutes then immediately stop and put away the "put away" stuff. I tend to collect containers of miscellaneous stuff and this helps with that-when I remember to do it. 😂

I had a nightmare that showed a violent act and didn't realize it was because I was grieving my grandmother. For some reason I totally cleaned my room. Took down picture and had blank walls. I didn't want to eat. She passed when i was 18. I'm 60. I didn't attend her funeral due to family issues. I usually avoid being angry because it's explosive. Like in my dream. I didn't realize it was me in the dream. I'm overweight and have issues with relationships because they say I'm always angry. But I don't feel angry. My house is a wreck and has been for years. Clothes. My grandmother has so many clothes too. Going to goodwill to make donations.

HIGHLIGHTS: 💰 Selling or Letting Go: Weigh the value of your items against the effort to sell them. ⏳ Time Investment: Selling often takes more time than anticipated; double your estimates. 📈 Market Research: Understand current demand for items to gauge potential selling price. 🎉 High-Value Items: Focus on selling high-value items or bundles for better returns. 🤝 Safety 1st: Always prioritize safety when meeting buyers; choose secure locations & pay methods. 💖 Emotional Value: Sometimes, it’s better to donate sentimental items rather than selling at a price. 🚫 Garage Sale Risks: Set deadlines for garage sales to avoid clutter build-up and ensure action. KEY INSIGHTS: 💡 Value Assessment: Before selling, assess both the monetary and emotional value of items. Often, emotional ties can outweigh potential cash gains. 📊 Effort vs. Reward: Consider the time and effort required to sell; sometimes, the hassle isn’t worth a low return. A clear calculation can guide your decision. 🔍 Demand Fluctuates: Items that were once valuable may not hold the same market demand today. Regularly research to stay informed about what sells well. 🎯 Focus on Quality: Prioritize selling larger quantities or high-value items rather than individual low-value items to maximize your efforts. ⚠ Scam Awareness: Be vigilant against scams when selling online; always meet in safe public places and choose secure payment options. 🤗 Giving vs. Selling: For items with significant emotional value, consider gifting or donating them to preserve memories rather than commoditizing them. 📅 Garage Sale Planning: If planning a garage sale, set a firm date and follow through to avoid indefinite clutter accumulation.

I had a moment of shame when I was visited at home by a doctor, and she tripped on my knitting bag that was on the floor. Luckily, she didn't fall, but I was mortified - my clutter nearly injured someone who'd taken time to come to my home to help me. At least I've made sure that my floor is no longer a tripping hazard, even if it is still cluttered around the edges.

So I have ADHD and loads of clutter. My kids don’t, apart from that I have bought my daughter lots of toys and stuff, which is all over her room. Do you think it will cause her to be more distracted to grow up surrounded by clutter? ……I love the box idea! Game changer!!!

We are all advised to wash and dry thrift store items Before bringing them into your home. Bed bugs are insidious and they have come here from China with wealthy businessmen. In my building, it cost management almost $100,000 dollars to get rid of them. It isn’t solely the landlord’ responsibility. AND THEY THRIVE in clutter! It’s costly disgusting and demoralizing. How do you say to grandchildren “ 12:55 sorry, you can’t come until I get rid of the bedbugs? “

Ty so much. I am at the point when I am thinking about what heirlooms to hand down . I will be ok if my adult daughters do not want certain things. It is their perogative. And yes, some of us have been the "keeper" of the heirlooms. I am getting more comfortable with letting some go, maybe by selling them.

@Decluttering Club, please let us know HOW to get over “decision fatigue”… last challenge we took a month and cleaned out the garage.. 😳… then? I find it extremely hard to start up again… I thought if I took a few days off, but I think I still have it or something. 😢

If you let someone else make all your decluttering decisions for you, you never learn how to make decisions. Decision making is a muscle 💪 that needs to be flexed and built up with practice. Making yourself dependent on someone else isn't empowerment. I like The Decluttering Club's approach of asking oneself questions, that help one reach decisions.

Listen to what Sarah's saying because it's true. When you've filled your home with clutter due to (for example) depression you'll start going out for the day (anywhere!!) simply to avoid having to tackle it. I found myself hoarding due to an horrific menopause and went from a minimal interior to a cluttered one and couldn't figure out why I felt so constrained and lacking in motivation. So one day I filled the car and donated it all to charity: the rest I threw in a skip. And my life started afresh.

That is definitely where I am. I have much improved on some maintenance & letting go of stuff, but I have boxes & files of papers (&other clutter) all saved or bought w a purpose in mind. Still trying to develop the ruthless mindset where I don't have to analyze every single thing. As you say, it's a habit that needs practice to develop.

I wholeheartedly understand the dilemma. I think I have all the symptoms. 😮 I do OK with maintenance for a while and letting some things go, but I still have rooms and boxes full of papers and clothes. My motivation has been shot. Trying to give myself some grace after being divorced this year and still living in the same house that we lived in for over 30 years and having to go back to work full-time. It’s very overwhelming. But I guess I’m not alone.

I recently donated 3 bags of clothes to my local hospice thrift store. Specifically I had a slew of very nice skirts I’ve accumulated over the years … except I’ve never worn them - not even once! But every time I open my closet I’d look at them and admire how beautiful they are. I would always put them on and then decide not to wear it. So last week I told myself it doesn’t matter how beautiful they are - if I actually haven’t worn them in 7yrs I need to say goodbye 🥲 Yesterday I went into the shop and saw a few of my pieces on the rack and I didn’t feel sad when I saw them. 😊

Tip #2 was an A-HAAAA for me!! It’s SO easy to sabotage myself by switching from space to space cuz if I find something that doesn’t belong there, then I MUST go rehome it where it does belong… Soooooo… having this “barrier box” to place those things in until the focus space is completed will absolutely be a game changer for me! Thanks so much! Sometimes we just need to hear a different perspective or idea that can minimize some of our ADHD chaos… Appreciate this!
