I want to turn much of my yard into more of a garden, so I have less lawn to mow & maintain & and hopefully, the mulch, rock & design will make it more appealing to birds & people.

I live on a 1/2 acre property when I retired a was set on creating a food forest in my back yard so I bought many fruit trees to join my six 30 year old oak trees plus a pecan tree so I dug and dug 10 fig,5 apples,2 persimmons,6 pomegranate,2 avocados,5 elderberries,2 star fruit,3 grapes,morninga,bananas,2 paw paw trees along with many hibiscus,Turk caps roses and herbs for my pollinators and hummingbirds. Before I realize I had truck load of stones that I pulled out of the holes I was digging anywhere from 5 in. to 12 in long stones different colors reds,browns creams and white it took about a year before I could come up with what to do with them so I went to hardware store bought a cement bag and created about a 7 in tall flower bed with the stones around my 30 year old trees big enough to plant my other plants cannas,hydrangeas etc. had never worked with cement before but did little at a time and they look beautiful as I put solar lights around them specially the one that’s about 15 ft long with two oaks. I get many compliments as I still continue to work with the stones

Most of these ideas are harmful for the trees. Root crowns and root flares need to be exposed at the bottom of the tree...
