It is my opinion that coal is actually a lot cheaper than gas or diesel that's what's so great about steam engines. 😁 I wish I had a steam engine steamboat.

what do they use as fuel for the boilers
@maltelec8 ай бұрын
The boats use a mixture of fuels. Coal, Diesel, Kerosene, Wood, Propane. Coal is "traditional" but oil is reasonably common too. I only know of one burning wood and one on propane. With propane the gas bottles are sat in water to prevent them from freezing.

Run the upload at 1/4 speed and you can see the prop turing easy, which means he has it at idle speed only . :)
@7071t64 жыл бұрын
I am wondering how much drag that trailer is causing the prop, in a spitfire its all smooth front end, not big and bulky parts directly behind the prop ?

Where did you get that lovely triple expansion engine? It's a beauty! At what psi does it operate? How long to get up steam? Great video, happy steaming!
@maltelec4 жыл бұрын
My dad built the engine. Runs at around 150psi. Depending on who is firing it usually takes an hour to get going.
@josephgreeley55694 жыл бұрын
He was obviously a very talented individual, it's a real work of art-as is your launch. My steamboat is only 2.5 feet long but on the other hand it only takes 5-10 minutes to get steam up! Thanks for the reply!

Absolutely brilliant! A beauty to boot! This reminds me of an article in an old mother earth news magazine, I think late 1970s or early 1980s where I guy showed how you could convert an inline-four-cylinder car engine to run as a steam engine. Anyway, thank you for sharing this with us and happy boating!

Great engineering with elegance but worrying to see the lack of life belts being worn its the same as not wearing a seat belt mentality “it ain’t going to happen to me, I know what I’m doing”, glad to see more intelligent use of life preservers being used on the Thames and the Broads these days.
@maltelec4 жыл бұрын
On the Thames you are likely to get run over by another boat or overcome by the filth in the water, not to mention the strong currents. Windermere has almost no currents, and while it is 10 miles long, you are almost never more than a couple of hundred yards from the shore line.
