I have a regular single tube F40 T12 light in my garage and it does take a bit longer to start up than this one but one time I found a really old bulb that would work for it in the attic of that garage and when I tested out, it was soapy. It looked like a preheat was starting up.

There were a couple of these lights on my grandmother's farm. The sound they make and the unique, ghostly greenish-white light they put out remind me of summer evenings spent there.

Wow, this bulb have a amazing CRI for a mercury lamp, the collors overral seems good.
These were also sold in Australia and I’ve seen quite a few of these in the past, mainly in 80w MV.

These bulbs are better public lighting than LEDs and last for many years.

I'd be too tempted to retro-fit that with mercury gear and run it with a clear lamp. Is the lens assembly acrylic or polycarbonate? That would be the deciding factor.

I remember when the first 70W HPS light fixtures came out almost 50 years ago. You could always tell by the orangish color, even from an airplane.

I have one. Well used. I once had it installed on the house. It is 70 watt metal halide. Yours would be better with a GE Lucalox than this crappy Sylvania Luma-SUX! They made horrible HPS lamps that don’t have amalgam reservoirs and practically burn out in what seems to be e about 50 hours! 😩 Total and utter CRAP bulbs! Sylvania never could do HID worth a crap 💩! The fixture is nice though! The spring in the Luma-Sux lamp makes them “look” high quality, but they are junk. I had enough experience with them to be able to tell you that. Any HPS lamp with amalgam reservoirs is trash. I guess the metal halide pulse start version like the one I have is pretty rare. The ballast can rub 75-100 watt mercury lamps with the igniter disconnected. Anyway, cheers!

Compared to the GE m250r and the cooper OVH be side it that’s a tiny streetlight. But still a cool little streetlight

I ran into one of these bad boys at antique store recently. It was one of the UV-emitting suntan models, not for general illumination. It looked really cool, but I don't think the seller knew what they had on their hands, as it was running in a regular desk lamp, and it was insanely hot. It was of course belching out UV light, so I didn't mess with it for very long.

That’s such a cool fixture! I like how it is so versatile in how it can be mounted. I could see something like a retail store just ordering a bunch of these to tackle their outdoor lighting instead of individual types of fixtures. They could mount them on arms for the parking lot lights, mount them to the side of the building for lighting around the store, and mount them to the ceiling for any covered areas they may have.

Its been a dream of mine to own a hps light. I have wanted one for as long as i was a kid.. never could afford one. Still can't afford one. Oh well maybe in my afterlife i can get one. I even tried asking the city for one and they laughed at me.....

I understand your feeling, I felt the same way before I got my first one. It will happen and probably at the most unexpected time too. I would try looking at salvage stores and used building material stores, these usually have these kinds of fixtures for cheap.

Nice find, these old versions are the best! I think these 300 watt bulbs are still made under the GE name but with a horizontal filament and of course made in china.

For those of you whose fan has a fixed knob and a hole that's too small, I heated a nail over the stove using some pliers and very carefully enlarged the whole around the pin by melting the plastic away so now I can remove the casing like in the video. Just make sure you're doing it in a well ventilated space.

we used to use an old Hanovia lamp with a woods glass filter as a Magnaflux lamp. Very dangerous lamp if you're not careful.

I have one of these exact yardblaster security lights, but managed to convert it to 175W M57 probe start metal halide using a European low voltage 2 wire parallel soft ignitor to assist with starting probe start metal halide lamps without the need to change the ballast.

@@Parrot175 Thanks. I am currently running a Venture Lighting 3200K coated base up burn 175W M57 probe start metal halide lamp in that yardblaster and it emanates a very beautiful glow that reminds me of stores once lit by metal halide lighting before LED took over since I recall some stores using 3200K coated probe start metal halide lamps in some high bay fixtures.

That Hanovia lamp looks like it has a UV-C germicidal bulb, which you have to be very careful with because exposure to it will damage your skin and eyes.
