I just got my Cicada box, very cool. However I don't live anywhere near a Cicada hatch(Pacific NW) what can I tie with this kit that works up here?
@smittysflybox23 күн бұрын
The Cicada also works as just a general summer attractor fly, I'd suggest shaping the foam to more of a beetle or ant pattern. You can make all kinds of variations with the materials that come in the box

Is Calf hair better than a poly wing post.
@smittysflyboxАй бұрын
I personally like calf body hair. I think it looks better and I like the stiffness. Poly yarn works great too, really just personal preference

@@smittysflybox I find the synthetic easier to tie.

So what I like to do right after I tie the hackle to the post, is to dub on some sparkly dub for the head to give it some shimmer. Such a killer pattern year round. Thanks for posting!

It looks like size 4 hooks came with the box. Is it best to use a size 8 for this pattern? This is my first time attempting to a tie a fly
@smittysflybox2 ай бұрын
Send me an email, I’ll send you the size 8 hooks. The size 4 hooks are for the intermediate box, they would probably work for the Chernobyl. They have a short shank. Sorry for the mixup

My pack came with dirty hackle feathers. Some are pretty gunked up. Also the kit only gives enough marabou if you use each feather twice. I’m not able to tie the 25 flies according to the instructions. It greatly decreases the quality of the flies.

Thanks! Yes Squirrel works great, it was just a little tough for us to source in a large qty to supply our boxes
@GeorgeSemel3 ай бұрын
I bought some squirrel the other day to tie Slumpbusters. I barely got four flies out of a package. I got a source for whole skins zonked. I paid 7 dollars for that package, and a whole pelt is 20 bucks from J. Stockard since I live in CT.

I bought a kit that makes 25 Wooly Buggers from your company. How do you place the brass bead that came with the kit?
@smittysflybox4 ай бұрын
You can put a bead on your wooly bugger if you'd like. Simply slide the bead onto hook with the small hole first.Then just tie the fly like normal

So many tie fly videos, I’m new to tying so appreciate the slower full description and explanation…. I’ve seen a few that also included a small wire open forward wrap over the dubbing, do you prefer to skip for any reason, weight or looks?
@smittysflybox5 ай бұрын
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Adding a rib is just personal preference. I usually don’t add a rib on this fly because it will add weight. You could use flashabou for rib and it’ll add some flash to the body.

I tie a similar pattern with a purple cdc or purple thread tag butt, whichever I have handy. I fish Utah rivers year round. This pattern works best for me as a point fly in 3.5 to 4.3mm. Copper, rose pink, or gunmetal beads. I out fished my veteran euro buddy 18 to 3. I caught all but 2 on this pattern (the original recipe as shownin the video). For extra durability try xs copper or rust wire. Keep the body thin. You can still have a taper just don't bog it down with a dub body. Tight lines. Practice good stream etiquette and keep the rivers healthy.
@smittysflybox6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I like that idea of a copper ribbing. The fly does feel like it needs a little ribbing through the dubbing. Thanks

Quick question. What makes this a “cripple?”
@smittysflybox7 ай бұрын
It’s just a style of dry fly that makes a fly look like a it’s struggling to hatch. It will sit low in the water with a trailing shuck and a profile of a Dun with wings not fully formed or laying correctly. It’s a really effective pattern in hatches. The original pattern is called a Quigley cripple
