There IS an actual Rocky Top. It’s a mountain peak that’s actually rocky and stands above Cades Cove. The song is based on that mountain top. The next mountain top over is Thunderhead Mountain. It gets its name because it always seems to have a thunderstorm around it during warmer months.

I wish they’d make a movie where some Chinese or Russian paratroopers land out in Appalachia. Bobcat screams echoing through the woods and this song playing out in the distance coming from the same direction. They’re being hunted down and picked off by hillbillies and has the atmosphere and theme of a horror movie like Wrong Turn or The Hills Have Eyes, but instead of being a horror movie you’re like “fuck yeah, ‘merica”

I was thinking the same exact thing. Set in the 1880s post-Civil War or the 1920s during prohibition. Either way, it's about a bunch of moonshiners/country boys vs a Wendego. I'd watch the hell out of it. And not be able to sleep for a year
