PC version. Specifically an Italian re-release of the game that lacks DRM and a file switched around to have the game believe its the English release. (initially mistook it as from a Polish re-release until I realized it was Italian. There is a polish re-release that is DRM free, hence my initial confusion, lol)

I was searching for this demo disc for years. Had it when I was like 7 or 8 but the only thing I could remember was Einhander and Tomba. Tomba demo discs always brought up different ones and I could never find the proper disc. This was it, thank you so much. Also, Jersey Devil awakened memories long forgotten, had so much fun.

I wish we got to see the duel where you swap cars with the opponent. It seems like the developers implemented every idea they had with this game. I read @needbacon's comment and it just surprises me that they implemented this much in a 1999 PS1 title.

Hey I'm here. Yeah they threw everything and the kitchen sink at this. The car system alone is so insane. Like Syd was saying, even though there's only 40 bodies in game, it ultimately has a roster rivaling Gran Turismo. And you can make utterly insane stuff. Like for example, you CAN make Project Binky (A Mini with a Celica All-Trac drivetrain literally crammed under it) almost 1:1. OR that one Europa RE Amiya did up with a Rotary and a wild kit. Or paint a Testarossa purple and green with a Bosozuka style bodykit while having it powered by a Turbo Diesel from a bus; just to make a ferrari lawyer cry. From what Syd was saying, I do wonder what the game would be like if they managed the disk space a little better, or got a two disk release like FF7 did what they could do. Sadly this was lightning in a bottle and will NEVER be duplicated.

Wooo, this is where RL gets wild. And it doesn't stop until the end of the game either. A good example of it is around 3:08:40 when Shinsuke mentions the whole hiding out at the warehouse, on the first night when you can go there. There's a blink and you miss it part when the camera pans down to actually show off his brother's car (with a red arrow pointing to it). First play through you might not even connect the dots. But it was right there. God this game is so good.

Apologies for the rather abrupt start to this video, unfortunately there were serious encoding issues during the first hour or so of the recording of this VOD that left the footage largely unusable, despite my best efforts. This is largely why the voiceovers during cutscenes are delayed until I re-experimented, which ended up working out thankfully. This is a brief summary of what was lost in the part prior to this particular recording; - A few random rival encounters. - Visiting 'Tuneshop Windy' and acquiring new parts (including the S30 Body and the Aero-C kit. This is where the bodykits on cars start to get... insane.) - Helping Kenzo out with a 'Drift Dancer'. - A random encounter at 'Hashiriya's Village', with a unique duel where you swap cars with their own for a race.

This game is quite impressive considering its limitations. If Square had invested more on it, I could see this becoming a franchise.

I don't think it was necessarily a matter of budget. Like, maybe if they sprung to translate it and bring it over to North America and Europe they might have furthered their cult status. But I doubt this becomes some mega classic up there with RR Type 4 and Gran Turismo. Plus, the setting, the use of copyright skirting car and the still decidedly basic graphic allowing for so much variation. This was pure lightning in a bottle and I'm thankful to Hilltop and crew for translating it so more people can enjoy it. But absolutely there was no way Squeenix would carry this series on unless it became some mega success which I just don't see happening.

@@NEEDbacon What I mean by investing, is seeing its potential to expand into more games. I don't say become something big like Gran Turismo or Need For Speed, but something relevant. Unfortunately it had the same fate of Split/Second, and was abandoned in just one game.

If you're wondering it's fun, the answer is yes. Even if you're not big on JRPG's, the rpg elements are all pretty standard racing game. Only real issues if maybe having a guide for rare or out of the way parts.
